Frances Amyx Obituary

Frances Gwendolyn "Gwen" Mays Amyx, 84, widow of Douglas L. Amyx and resident of Greenwood, passed away April 17, 2025.

Born November 23, 1940, in Denton, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Frances Ozella Giles Coffey and Francis Atkins Mays. She was a 1958 graduate of Sanger High School and attended Cooke County Junior College. She retired from sales and ad manager at J.C Penney. She was a member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was an exceptional seamstress and crafter.

Gwen was Past Matron of Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, in Greenwood. She was Past Royal Matron, Rose Court No. 13, Order of the Amaranth, in Laurens, and served the Grand Court of South Carolina in various positions. She served as Mother Advisor of Greenwood Assembly No. 33, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, for over 35 years, and as a Grand Deputy. She was awarded the Grand Cross of Color in 1979.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Earlene Fouch.

Surviving to cherish her memory are the joys of her life--her children Dedra (Dan) Hart of Hartsville, SC, Douglas K. (Sandi) Amyx of Greenwood, SC, Darrett (Brian Clark) Amyx of Atlanta, GA, Desiree' (Joe) Jordan of Hood River, OR, Devlin (Rene) Amyx Sr. of Greenwood, SC, Denee' (Eric) Hayes of Pittsburgh, PA, and special daughter Mandy (Herbie) Dixon of Greenwood, SC; grandchildren Chelsi (Kyle) Friddle, Creighton (Erivious Payne) Amyx, Sullivan (Keirnan Buddendeck) Mackintosh, Davis Mackintosh, Devyn (Reid) Dixon, DJ (Brittany Templeton) Amyx, and Elliott, Adelle, and Vivian Hayes; ten great grandchildren and an eleventh to arrive; sister Shirlene Theobald of Gainesville, TX; five nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at Rice Memorial Baptist Church from 1:00 until 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 19. Rev. Dale Levan officiated the funeral service immediately afterward.

Pallbearers were Devlin Amyx Jr., Elliott Hayes, Tim Fleming, Dewey Cook, Billy Thompson, Walker Moore, and Jerry Carver. Honorary escorts are Friends in Faith Sunday School Class, Majority members of IORG, Mary Pinckney Ouzts Chapter No. 1 OES, and Rose Court No. 13 Order of the Amaranth.

A visitation at Coker Funeral Home in Sanger, TX will be held Wednesday, April 23 from 1:30 - 2:30pm with a graveside service to follow at 3:00pm at Sanger Cemetery.
