Len Bornemann Obituary

Len Bornemann, 79, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, in Greenwood, South Carolina. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, Len's life was marked by service, generosity, and a steadfast commitment to the people and places he loved.

Born on May 21, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, Len grew up with a passion for learning and athletics. As a youngster, he loved baseball, and shared fond memories of throwing a Little League no hitter and batting balls around with neighbor and Cardinals hall-of-famer, Joe Medwick. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri - Rolla, where he majored in mechanical engineering, played varsity basketball, and served as president of his chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. His academic journey continued with an MBA from the University of West Florida, equipping him with the tools to lead with both intellect and heart throughout his professional life.

Len's career began with Monsanto, where he dedicated 27 years of service. His work eventually brought his family to Greenwood-a place that would become not just home but the center of his enduring legacy. After retiring from Monsanto, Len embarked on a second career that reflected his deep love for community: serving for ten fulfilling years as Executive Director of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce (whose building was later named the "Bornemann Center for Community Excellence" in honor of his successful tenure). In this role, he championed local businesses and economic development with unmatched energy and vision.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Len was a pillar of civic engagement in Greenwood. He served on the Self Regional Hospital Board for twelve years (with two terms as Chair) and co-chaired the Cancer Center capital campaign for two years. His leadership extended to many other organizations: he was a past president and longtime member of the Rotary Club; served on the building commission for New Faith Presbyterian Church; and on seemingly countless other Boards, Commissions, and Committees. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to philanthropy and service, Len has been honored with selection as: "Executive of the Year" by the Carolinas Association of Chambers of Commerce Executives (2005); a member of the Greenwood County Hall of Fame (2104); and with the Spirit of Philanthropy Award from the Greenwood County Community Foundation (2023).

Among his many acts of generosity, one held special meaning: a memorial gift to the Cancer Center in honor of his beloved wife Lynn. The gift included a wall inscribed with the words "Peace Love Courage "-a tribute to their shared journey through cancer diagnoses and a message Len hoped would offer comfort and inspiration to others for generations to come.

Len's faith was central to his life. For over forty years, he was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. There he served in many roles-elder, youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, chair of the Building Commission, church treasurer-and always as a friend and mentor to many within the congregation.

Outside of work and service, Len found joy on the golf course. He cherished time spent with his golf buddies and celebrated an impressive seven holes-in-one-including one at the legendary St. Andrews.

Len is survived by his loving family: daughter Deborah Dunn and son-in-law George; son Lee Vartanian and spouse Ivy; son David Bornemann and spouse Cecelia; four grandchildren, Connor and Katie Dunn and Owen and Mays Vartanian; brother Larry Bornemann; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lynn Bornemann with whom he shared an unwavering love and bond that few couples ever achieve (he often remarked that their 1979 marriage was "The best decision I ever made") and his parents Leonard (Bud) and Marge Bornemann.

A wonderful husband and father, tremendous leader in the community, and loyal friend-Len's presence enriched countless lives. The family deeply appreciates the outpouring of support and visits in recent weeks.

May Len's memory be a blessing to all who knew him-and may his legacy continue to inspire through acts of kindness, leadership, faith, and courage.

A Memorial Service at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2330 Cokesbury Road, Greenwood, SC 29649. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
