William Tinkler Obituary

William Phillips Tinkler, Jr., 73, passed away on April 14 at his beloved mountain home in Suches, Georgia, after a brief illness. Born on September 12, 1951, in Miami, FL, Bill was the second of six children of William Phillips and Elsie McGill Tinkler. The family moved frequently in Bill's early years owing to his father's Air Force medical career. Bill lived in New Orleans; Rantoul, IL; Miami Springs, FL; and Wichita Falls, TX, before his father retired from the military and moved the family for a final time to Greenwood, SC, in 1960. There, Bill attended public schools, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1969, where he served as drum major of the marching band.

Bill studied history at Emory University, earning his B.A. degree in 1973. After college, he worked in the Office of Planning and Research of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources before attending the University of Georgia Law School. After receiving his law degree in 1979, he served as a law clerk in Brunswick, Georgia, for a federal district court judge, the Honorable Anthony A. Alaimo, with whom he formed a strong bond. Afterwards, Bill briefly worked for a Brunswick law firm before relocating to Atlanta and practicing law for four decades in Decatur. His legal work around Georgia led to friendships with attorneys all over the state.

In 1981, he married Virginia Whitehead and became the proud and loving stepfather of Brandon and Leslie Brown. Deeply knowledgeable about family history, Bill enjoyed connecting with his many relatives. He made multiple visits to Louisville, Georgia, to meet with his paternal grandmother's Phillips relatives, shared with his Uncle Sam Tinkler an enthusiasm for learning about a Civil War ancestor, and bought a painting by New York City artist Mamie Tinkler when he discovered she was his second cousin. Stories of his devotion to family are legion. For instance, he accompanied his brother Stuart, then recently diagnosed with leukemia, to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for medical consultation. He also took great interest in his cousin Jim McGill's clean water work in Africa, even traveling with his aunt, Nancy McGill, to visit Jim and his family in Malawi.

Bill is survived by his former wife, Virginia Tinkler, of Atlanta; by Brandon (Melissa) Brown of Baton Rouge, LA, and their children, Ansley and Cole; by Leslie Brown DeGretto, of Aurora, CO, and her children, Aidan and Lane; by his sister, Ellen (James) Reinig of Milton, GA; by his brothers Paul (Libby) of Charleston, SC, David (Brigid) of Davidson, NC, and Robert of Chico, CA; by his aunt, Ann Devlin, of Greenville, SC; and by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. His brother Stuart (Angela) predeceased him in 2016, as did his parents Elsie, in 2021, and Phil, in 2023.

On Sunday, June 8, at 1:00 pm, the family will receive guests, and a memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm, both at H. M. Patterson and Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd, NE, in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Water and Sanitation for Africa, Presbyterian Church (USA), P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700, or TGI (non-profit serving the elderly, for which Bill volunteered), 1667 Brentwood Crossing SE, Conyers, GA 30013.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. I´m happy to have known Bill when he moved to Greenwood, SC and we were fellow middle school and high school classmates and band members...truly an amazing student and clarinetist/french hornist/oboist, while I spent my time behind a trombone.
Godspeed Bill

Bill Tinkler was my friend. We met in our freshman year at UGA law school in 1976 and had a bond and relationship both professional and personal that continued until his untimely recent death. In fact, at the time of his passing Bill was representing my daughter in a civil case arising from a serious accident. There was no other attorney I would have ever considered to undertake her representation. Due to an unavoidable prior obligation I am unable to attend the memorial service however, I wanted to share a few observations of our times together. Bill and I tried several cases together and associated one another on many more. Bill had an encyclopedic knowledge of the law and was always ready and willing to share his insights with others in the profession. As a mutual attorney friend of ours pointed out to me recently in discussing Bill´s talents," I often felt I knew the forest but Bill could always find the tree." In the courtroom Bill was a tireless advocate for his clients and always conducted himself with a calm demeanor that impressed judges and jurors alike. He embodied an ethos and professionalism that I fear is being eroded in the current era. We shared an abiding interest in history and politics and I had the pleasure of accompanying him to find the gravesite of a distant relative who had served in the Confederate military during the Civil War. Among Bill´s collection of books, documents ,maps and other memorabilia was the miniball that was removed from the shoulder of this relative which saved him from further combat and likely saved his life. When working cases together or merely traveling through our respective ends of the state we usually stayed in the home of one another and Bill accompanied my family to our Florida place on several occasions and took part in offshore fishing trips which he enjoyed immensely. Bill was the most selfless man I have ever met. He spoke often of his family and was immensely proud of his parents, siblings and his stepchildren, Leslie and Brandon. We kept each other apprised of the minutia of our respective lives until the very end. Other than assisting in my daughter´s case I have retired from the practice of law, electing not to "die in the saddle." Bill and I discussed our advancing years and eventual decline often in recent months and I know that retirement was not an option for him. He was a lawyer´s lawyer and was most energized by understanding the nuances of any case he was involved in. I spoke with him often in the days prior to his departure and he was diligently pursuing a favorable conclusion in all of his cases. He died in his beloved mountain home near Suches doing what he loved. The law was not merely a vocation but an avocation as well. When thinking of Bill I am reminded of a comment that was made about another dear friend who passed away last year. "He always gave more than he got. "On behalf of my family I would like to express our deepest condolences and sympathy for this loss.

I will always be grateful to Bill for taking me on as a contract attorney when I had just arrived in Atlanta. As many have already commented, he indeed had a brilliant mind, but the gift that I treasured was his ability to surround himself with other great people--and I was lucky to work with them! This photo shows Bill with all of us in 2006. I send my condolences to the family and all those who were close to him.

I knew Bill from my first working days in Decatur as a paralegal twenty five years ago. My condolences to his friends and family. Bill was one of the most intelligent men I have had the privilege of knowing and ever working with. His love for law inspired me to always work harder, push a little further for the best results and be the best at what I give my time and energy too. He will be missed. Rest in peace Bill.

Bill was like a second father to me. My dad and Bill were close friends in law school and remained in touch throughout the remainder of Bill's life. He was also recently my attorney so I had the pleasure of seeing him and speaking to him until his sudden passing. You will be greatly missed by the legal community, friends and family!
