Agnes Canaan Obituary

Agnes "Nick" Nickell Canaan 95, formerly of Indianapolis, died Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Mulberry Health and Retirement Center. Born February 12, 1916 in Webville, KY, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Leander Garfield Nickell and Nancy (Coldiron) Nickell. She was raised in Grayson, KY. She married John R. Canaan on January 16, 1942 in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1984. Mrs. Canaan was a registered nurse. She worked for 20 years for the Veteran's Administration and then 20 years for the Indiana Department of Health. She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Lafayette and a former member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. She was also a member of Psi Iota Xi. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, and being with her grandchildren. Surviving are three sons: Michael S. Canaan (wife, Brenda) of Lafayette, Richard L. Canaan (wife, Patsy) of Lexington, SC and John R. Canaan, Jr. of Grapeview, WA. Four grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Private family services will take place at a later date. The family requests memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
