Alexander Tuthill "Skip" Lange 85, passed away Monday, July 12, 2010. Born in Berkeley, California, March 14, 1925 to Alexander D. and Dorothy A. Lange he moved to Indianapolis when he was 2. Skip is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alex, son Alexander C. "Sandy" Lange (Cindy), daughter Dorothea L. "Dori" Morton (Frank), and granddaughters: Samantha and Frances Morton; Kristen and Alexandra Lange. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Reinking. Skip served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant and P-51 pilot. He attended Purdue University, Aeronautical Engineering, and the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, where he earned a B.S. in Economics. Skip retired as Chairman of Pictorial, Inc., a producer of training programs and computer software for financial service companies in the U.S. and Canada. He had helped his father found the company in the late 1940's. Skip was very active in the community, serving as: President of Pike Township School Board; Trustee at Faith Methodist Church; President of Trader's Point Civic Association; Trustee at Indianapolis-Marion County Building Authority; Director of Pike Township Volunteer Fire Department; Director of Rotary Club of Indianapolis; President of Marquette Manor Foundation; and Director of Four Corners School of Outdoor Education. He was especially active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as: Scoutmaster of Troop 510 which he led to one of the largest in the District with the most Eagle Scouts; North Star District Chairman; President, Crossroads of America Council; President, Area 4 (Indiana) BSA; organizing Chairman, Council Eagle Scout Association; and served on the BSA National Training Committee. He was warmly recognized for his work with Scouting's highest awards: Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Distinguished Eagle Scout. Skip was Vice Chairman, Greater Indianapolis Republican Finance Committee; Organizing Chairman, Republican Round Table; Marion County Representative to Sixth District Committee; and a Candidate for Congress in 1978. Skip was also involved in numerous organizations including Rotary Clubs of Indianapolis, and Telluride and Cortez, Colorado; Phi Gamma Delta; Experimental Aircraft Association; Young Eagles, serving as Chairman; Indianapolis Symphony Society; Telluride Ski Ranches Association; Indian Camp Ranch Homeowners Association; Four Corners School Advisory Council; Crow Canyon Archaeological Center Chairman's Council; Founding Director and President, Southwest Heritage Foundation, Inc., Bluff, Utah; Eiteljorg Museum Development Council; Indianapolis Aero Club; and the Utah Back Country Pilots Association. Skip was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman and a skier, sailor, mountain climber, archaeologist, spelunker, and scuba diver. In the 1950's he raced sports cars in Sports Car Club of America, and was a member of SCCA National Competition Board and President of Indianapolis Region. He held his commercial single and multi-engine pilot's licenses. The family wishes to thank the fine doctors and nurses at IU University Hospital and Priority Physicians for their terrific service and support. There will be a private family service. Then, at Skip's wish, on Saturday, August 14, at 1:00 p.m., the family will host a Celebration of Skip's Life at his family home at 8119 Conarroe Road, Indianapolis. The celebration will include a time to share in stories and memories of this wonderful man followed by an informal reception. All family and friends and associates are welcome. In lieu of flowers, Skip requested any donations be made either to the Boy Scout Crossroads of America Council, or the Eiteljorg Museum, both in Indianapolis.
