Betty Bumb Obituary

Betty Bumb (Settle)

Betty had been fighting battles with pancreatic and lymphatic cancer since 2016. Despite setbacks she continued to play tennis, bridge, and dream of living to be 100 years old. She set medical records by outliving charts and graphs for sufferers of cancer. Her incredible fight was not alone however: Dr. Daniel Morris of Florida Cancer Center was her knight in shining white physician's jackets. He stood beside her and guiding her with utmost kindness.

Betty loved her family and friends from both Indianapolis and Naples. Having moved to Marco Island in 1974, she tirelessly helped others as a volunteer in the hospitals, churches and communities. She held her growing family together as life moved us away from our grounded base of Naples. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren certainly were loved unconditionally.

As a child prodigy of piano her life took a turn once she graduated from Butler University in the School of Pharmacy. She and her husband of 56 years both worked in the world of Pharmacy for over 35 years. They loved their work but they also loved to travel world wide. Taking retirement meant more time for tennis and bridge and her beloved Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples. Dr. Jim Cochran enriched Betty's life with his incredible abilities in music. From her wins in tennis to laughs at bridge.. Betty made others happier, healthier and inspired to try harder, live longer and laugh a little bit more each day. Although she started life as an orphan at age 5 - she was never alone.

She was loved by all who knew her and will surely be missed by all her family and friends far and wide. She loved all her friends at Stonebridge and the back pew gang at Vanderbilt.

She is survived by son, Louis A Bumb (Pam); daughter, Beverly Peterson (Neal); son, Larry A Bumb; and grandchildren, Victor Bumb, Angela Walker (Jeremy), Kristy Lawrence (Jason), Ryan Peterson (Kristin), James Bumb (Julie), and Liberty Bumb; and great-grandchildren, Brent Walker, Kathryn Bumb, Cade Lawrence, Jake Lawrence and Evan Amory.

Preceding Betty in death are her husband of 56 years, Louis Alfred Bumb; her adopted parents, Flora and Arnold Settle; her sisters, Ruth and Catherine; biological mother/father, Sarah Rose Buhnerkemper and Fred Buhnerkemper; and daughter-in-law, Patti Boyer Bumb.

Accomplishments: Lambda kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Biology Instructor: Butler School of Pharmacy, Deacon at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church, Naples Community Hospital volunteer, Organist at Crestview Christian Church-Indianapolis, IN, 3.0 Tennis Champion 1996-singles, Pharmacist at Hay's Pharmacy-Carmel, IN, Graduated from Shortridge High School-Indianapolis, IN.

Graveside Service will be held Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in Washington Park North Cemetery, 2702 Kessler Blvd W. Dr. Indianapolis.

We will always remember your smile and courage you had to fight for your life. You never showed any sadness, just your beautiful smile when you show up for tennis. We will miss you at STONEBRIDGE.
