So saddened by this news. I first met Bret at The Game Preserve in Indianapolis and have fond memories of playing various games with him and others there. A few times we even carpooled to different events, including one memorable roadtrip to Chicago. I'd had a rough start to my summer and getting to spend time with Bret for that extended period of time was such a positive thing for me and helped me know that I had people around me who cared about me. Bret always made everyone feel that way: welcomed, seen, and valued. Whether we were cracking jokes or making up raps together, I always had a good time when I spent time with him. One time after he got off work we wound up having a Nerf battle in the parking lot--I'd come home from my first year in undergrad and had the toys in my trunk. About a year ago he came up to Chicago, and I got to meet up with him for pizza. It was great to get to reminisce and reconnect. I'd really enjoyed getting to follow his adventures via Instagram, too. He had such a positive presence online and offline and served as a great example for everyone who knew him. He will be dearly missed by many, I'm sure.

Brets life made a difference to so many others. However, his previous gift of bone marrow gave life and hope to those in their darkest hours. I know he is in heaven because of this selfless act of kindness. The world is a better place because he was in it.

Our deepest sympathies to your family and Bret's friends. We had the privilege to meet Bret when he visited our home last December with our daughter, Allison. What a dear, dear, sweet, kind, funny, intelligent young man. He had so many friends here in Texas and they/we loved him so much. May the Peace of God heal the brokenness and we are praying for you. Bret will be deeply missed.

I met Bret in person only a handful of times in the past 5 years, and yet he had the incredible power to make you feel like you had been a part of the group as much as anyone else. He sincerely cared about every single person. People who'd met him only once were left hoping they'd get more opportunities to spend time with him and get to know him even more. He was the type of person that everyone wants to be friends with, not just because he was cool or funny (both true), but because his big heart and passion for life were so evident on him in every moment. He was the friend you want to be. He inspired others to be better, to try harder, to strive for more, just by being himself. There's so much more to say and not enough words to express all the significance and wonder which were expressed on their truest essence in Bret's life. My deepest condolences to everyone he left behind. May you find comfort in his memory, in his creations, and in the network of amazing people he found and brought together. <3

A candle burns bright for Bret in Louisville. Just as his personality lit up every room and put a smile on everyone's face. I know God hears our prayers, and works outside of time and space. I will pray for Bret every day, in my heart his memory will forever stay. God bless you, Bret, and your family.
