Charles David Kain 46, of Muncie passed away unexpectedly Monday, February 4, 2008 at his home. Born on May 20, 1961 in Brook, IN to Charles Richard and Juanita (Mosson) Kain he grew up in Kentland and Indianapolis, Indiana. Chef Kain had been a sous chef at Ball State University's Noyre Center since 1997 and had taught courses in Hospitality Administration at Ivy Tech State College in Muncie since 2004. He graduated summa cum laude from Johnson and Wales University with an Associate degree in Culinary Arts and earned his Bachelor's degree cum laude in Hospitality Management from Ball State University. He was a member of the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, the Silver Key Honor Society and the Golden Key Honor Society. He has served as Executive Chef at Z'Bistro, Zionsville, Indiana, Executive Chef at the Columbus Convention Center and Culinary Manager for Grindstone Charley's and Houlihan's restaurants in Indiana. Chef Kain has earned five Bronze medals and one Gold Medal in ACF sanctioned culinary competitions. A Certified Executive Chef, he was the founding president of the American Culinary Federation - East Central Indiana chapter. He is survived by his daughter, Taylor Michelle Kain of Anderson; his mother, Nita Kain of Muncie, IN; his father, Charles Richard (wife Sue) of Indianapolis; brother, Gary Kain (wife Karen) of Raub, IN; two sisters, MaryBeth Sears and Lisa Borges (husband John) of Indianapolis; nephew Aaron and Nicholas, nieces Amy, Vanessa, Valerie, Crystal and Jamie, much-loved great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Gurthie Kain, May and Jesse Baker, and Arthur Mosson. A funeral service in celebration of David's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home at 4600 W. Kilgore Ave. Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 5 to 8 PM Friday, and one hour prior to services Saturday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home.
