Mr. Thornberry stopped in at the Huddle restaurant where I was cooking. I don't remember what I cooked for him but he apparently was impressed and offered me a job at Bonanza down the street on Keystone Ave.
I took the job but started back in the kitchen washing dishes. He was always watching and teaching and eventually I was cooking steaks on the grill.
Sound like an easy job? On weekend nights and holidays the customers stood in line from the counter to halfway around the building. I had to have steaks on the grill from rare to well done ready to go.
At the start of the counter line was all of the awards that Mr. Thornberry had won with this restaurant.
Sure, we helped him win but it was because of what he taught us. It didn't hurt that one of the most beautiful girls in the world worked right next to the grill who I will refer to as KK. I remember my bosses name and the life lessons he taught us. I was 16 years old then and 72 now.
