Henry Leist Obituary

Henry N. Leist The Honorable Henry N. Leist, 76 years of age, died Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Floyd Memorial Hospital & Health Services. He was a New Albany, IN native and son of the late Frances Dunn Leist and Henry N. Leist, Sr. He was Judge of the Floyd County Circuit Court from 1981 through 1998, and then served as a Senior Judge for the State of Indiana until his recent illness. Judge Leist graduated from Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington in 1953. He served in the US Air Force, J.A.G. Dept. from 1953-1955, was Public Defender and Floyd County Attorney from 1956-1958 and Judge of the New Albany City Court from 1960-1968. He was also a former lecturer and member of the Board of Advisers at Indiana University Southeast and former Advisory Board Member of Providence Self-Sufficiency Ministries, Inc. He was a member of the New Albany Rotary Club, the Elks Club #270, Bonnie Sloan Post #28 American Legion, the Providence High School Booster Club and a lifetime member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was a member of the Indiana University Varsity Club, the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indiana Judges Association where he served on the Board of Managers from 1983-1985. He also served on the Board of Directors, Judicial Conference of Indiana from 1984-1986. He was also a former member of the Juvenile Justice Improvement Committee, and Judicial Conference of Indiana. Judge Leist was preceded in death by his son, John Christopher Leist in 1983. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Patricia Jenks; son, Stephen P. (Debra) Leist of New Albany, IN; daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Cecil) Sexton of New Albany, IN; grandchildren: Matthew, Michael, Maxwell Leist & John Nicholas Sexton. Visitation will be at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring St., New Albany, IN from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2005 & 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2005 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of New Albany, IN with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. A prayer service will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy to: John C. Leist Memorial Fund.
