John Finucane Obituary

John L. Finucane, Sr., Passed away on June 19, 2003 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, at the age of 86. Memorial services will be held Sat. June 28 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3243 N. Meridian St. Calling will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with services at 1:15 p.m. Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery, section for veterans, immediately following. Mr. Finucane was an Indianapolis resident for 43 years after moving here from Illinois with his late wife, Gloria and three sons in 1958. He was born in Marlin, TX on Nov. 3, 1916. After receiving his B.A. from the University of Texas, he later attended the University of Illinois where he received his Master of Science. He was commissioned Ensign at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1942 and served on active duty in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during WWII. He was then, recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Finucane achieved the rank of Lt. Commander as well as G.S. 13 status during civil duty with the U.S. Government until his retirement. He was involved with the construction and supervision of achievement, type tests used in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy operations at the Finance Center, Ft. Harrison. These tests are administered Army and Navy-wide to aid in determining which personnel are eligible for rank promotion. He also supervised the establishment of minimum passing and promotion scores for the evaluation tests. During his service to the U.S. Government, and after moving to Indianapolis, Mr. Finucane held a patent and was president of the Woodall Corp., a manufacturer of furniture covers, which marketed his patent. Retiring in 1978, Mr. Finucane acquired his real estate broker's license and continued to sell real estate until 1987. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, a scout master of it's troop 80, founding member of Five Seasons Sport and Country Club and a life-long member of the Retired Officer's Association, NEA and the English Speaking Union. He is survived by his three sons John Leslie, Jr. and Woodall F. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Stuart M. Finucane, Indianapolis; three grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the church. Arrangements: Crown Hill Funeral Home.
