John Haynes Obituary

John Thomas Haynes, MD

84, passed away peacefully at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 29, 2016. Dr. Haynes was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 28, 1931 to Dellah and Dr. Edgar Haynes. As a boy he had interests in science and sports, and worked at Hamachers in Broad Ripple. He went to Broad Ripple High School where he met the love of his life, Helen Marie, whom he married May 12, 1956. Helen was by his side when he passed away.

Dr. Haynes attended Indiana University for both undergraduate and medical school degrees. He was a member of Acacia and rode in the inaugural Little 500. He remained a supporter of the Hoosiers his entire life. He entered his medical practice with a residency at Methodist Hospital, and established one of the first allergy practices in the state. Indianapolis Allergists Inc. was a thriving practice that treated generations of patients over the years. Dr. Haynes was known for his compassion, sense of humor and the ability to give shots that were all but painless. Dr. Haynes was responsible for the development of the Pollen Count. He retired in 2006.

Dr. Haynes had several hobbies, including being a Rotary member for many years, model building and LBG Trains. His train sets were admired by all and a great favorite of his grandchildren. He enjoyed several trips to Africa and frequently vacationed in Florida. He and his wife often entertained at their home, including hosting many of the stars of Starlight Musicals. Dr. Haynes was an original owner of the Indiana Pacers ABA Basketball team. He and his wife were also long term season ticket holders of the Indianapolis Colts, attending their games for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Smith) Haynes; two sons, Thomas Haynes of Indianapolis, Indiana and Robert Haynes of Potomac, Maryland; two daughters-in-law, Libby Haynes and Susan Haynes; five grandchildren, Addison Haynes (Kali), Seth Haynes (Jessica), Keenan Haynes, Kathryn Haynes and Joseph Haynes; one great granddaughter, Briella Haynes.

I was a patient of Dr Haynes when he first came on board with Dr Kaplan from 1965, well into the 1980s. Being a small child and coming to an office to get shots can be intimidating, but he was the kindest man and had such a warm and welcoming smile! I always looked forward to seeing him and the huge, soothing fish aquarium. I have never forgotten and always been forever grateful for his contributions for the relief of allergy sufferers. Condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Mrs. Haynes,
I was deeply saddened by the loss of your husband. My parents Lou and Marty really enjoyed being your neighbors and had so much fun getting together. So sorry I was not in town to give you a hug, we have moved to Fort Myers about 4 years ago. Please know that my husband Tom and I will keep you and your family in our prayers.
