Marcus Woods Obituary

Marcus E. Woods

of Cicero, IN, died September 29, 2016 at the age of 86. He was born June 11, 1930 in Huntington, IN to Harry and Bertha (Becker) Woods who preceded him in death.

He graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1948 and attended Loras College at Dubuque, Iowa. In 1950 he transferred to Marquette University at Milwaukee, Wisconsin from which he graduated in June 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

To satisfy his requirement for compulsory military service, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in September of 1952 serving as a Manpower Management Specialist and later as a Special Agent for the Office for Special Investigations. Upon completion of active duty in September of 1956, he enrolled in Indiana University School of Law from which he received a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1960 (later converted to a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree). Having passed the bar in May of 1960, he was appointed Deputy Attorney General of Indiana and served as an attorney for various State agencies including the State Board of Accounts, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Public Service Commission of Indiana (later renamed the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission).

In January 1965 he joined the legal department of Indianapolis Power & Light Company. On November 27, 1965 he was married to Jean Ann Vickers who died in May of 2014 after 48 years of marriage. They had three children, Marcus II, Patrick and Edith and seven grandchildren all of whom survive him.

In January 1995 after 30 years of service, he retired from Indianapolis Power and Light Company as its Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel. He held memberships in various legal and business organizations including the Indianapolis and Indiana State Bar Associations, the Legal Committee of the Edison Electric Institute, and the American Legion. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Cicero, IN and the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 410 South Pearl Street, Cicero, IN, 46034 on October 3, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dale Ehrman officiating. Burial will follow at Cicero Cemetery.  Visitation will also be at the Church in the Chapel on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with the Rosary Service at 3:30 p.m. Hartley Funeral Homes is entrusted with the services where you may send condolences at www.hartleyfuneralhomes.com.
