Dr. Panayotis George Iatridis

passed away on July 9, 2016, he was 89. Dr. Iatridis was a former Assistant Dean of lndiana University School of Medicine and the Director of the Northwest Center for Medical Education. Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1926, Dr. Iatridis later moved to Greece where he received an M.D. and Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Athens. Dr. Iatridis came to the United States as a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the 1960s where he conducted research as a hematologist on blood coagulation and thrombosis. Dr. Iatridis moved to Valparaiso, Indiana in 1972 to continue his research and teaching. During his tenure in Northwest Indiana, he established the Indiana University Northwest Center for Medical Education in Gary as a premier institution for medical education. Dr. Iatridis was appointed as its Director in 1975 and Assistant Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1979, he served in both positions until his retirement in 1997. Dr. Iatridis pioneered many research and teaching methods, including a system of problem based learning for medical students. He was a dedicated physician, researcher and professor, and a member of innumerable societies including the American College of Physicians, the Academy of Athens, and was President of the Lake County Medical Society. Dr. Iatridis was a recipient of the Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Faculty Award as well as a recipient of the Medal of St. Paul from the Archdiocesan of the Greek Orthodox Church. In 1998 he was appointed a Chieftan and Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon.

Dr. Iatridis was a beloved husband, father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Nina Iatridis, his two daughters Yanna Kokkas (Panos Kokkas), Mary Pease (Greg Pease)and five grandchildren Katerina Kokkas, Anastasia Kokkas, Nicholas Pease, Naya Pease and George Pease, his sister Kaliopi Kyrkou and brother Sotiri Iatridis. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. George Iatridis, mother Ioanna Iatridis, sister Eleftheria Mandikas, and brothers Emmanuel, Vasili and Kimon Iatridis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Panayotis Iatridis Scholarship at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Calling will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at St George Eastern Orthodox Church, 10748 East 116th Street Fishers, IN 46037 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 7 p.m. Additional calling will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2016 beginning at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery Fishers, IN.
