Dr. Raymond S. Dean

When Dr. Raymond S. Dean, 68, died at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital on July 6, 2015, he left the earth as one-of-a-kind. As a father, neuropsychologist, professor, mentor and friend, Dr. Dean's impact on those who knew him was even greater than his sharp wit and intellect. Born on September 24, 1946, in Troy, New York, Dr. Dean became a lover of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Motown Sound and Jack Nicholson. He is survived by three daughters, Heather (Brian) Barton, Whitney (Nate) Klinck and Sarah Dean; two grandsons, Simon and Fletcher Klinck; two step-grandchildren, Jordan and Jeremy Barton; brother David Dean, and sister Nan Osborn. He is preceded in death by parents Stanley and Helen Dean, and sister Diane Champitto.

As a neuropsychologist, he served patients for nearly 40 years. However, teaching may have been his greatest passion. From 1978-1980, Dr. Dean was an Assistant Professor and Director of the Child Clinic at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During this time he was awarded the Lightner Witmer Award by the School Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association. From 1980-1981, he served as Assistant Professor of Psychological Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1981-1984, Dr. Dean served as Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology and Director of the Neuropsychology Internship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. During this same time, he received both the Outstanding Contribution Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the Early Contribution Award by Division 15 of the APA. In addition, he served as Distinguished Visiting Faculty at the Staff College of the National Institute of Mental Health. He was named the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Neuropsychology and Director of the Neuropsychology Laboratory at Ball State University and served in this position since 1984. Over his 30 years at Ball State University, he oversaw the neuropsychology training of numerous students, who now make their own professional impact rooted in Dr. Dean's mentorship.
