Roger Tobias Obituary

Roger H. Tobias

Following a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Roger Harwood Tobias died peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2016 - the day before his 79th birthday - at his home in Carmel Indiana. He was surrounded by his loving family and died in the same way he lived his entire life, as the most upbeat person in the room.

He was born August 23, 1937 in Home Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana to Roy Gordon Tobias and Fern Harwood Tobias, lifelong residents of Remington, Indiana where he grew up. Both preceded him in death.

From 1943 to 1955 he attended Remington Public Schools. In 1959 he graduated from what is now the Indiana University Kelley School of Business with a BS in Marketing and also with an ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in air defense artillery in the United States Army.

From 1959 to 1961 he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and then Arlington Heights, Illinois as a Nike missile launch commander. From 1959 to 1994, with time away for military service, he held various management positions in sales and marketing at Sears Roebuck and Company. From 1995 to 2004 he was a vice president and investment advisor at Morgan Stanley.

For nearly 20 years he was the co-owner and managing partner of Double R Stables, in partnership with his brother Randall, focused on owning, breeding and racing thoroughbred horses. At the time of his death he was particularly excited about the upcoming racing prospects of a beautiful two-year old colt named in his honor, "Run Roger Run."

Beyond his lifelong passion for thoroughbreds, he enjoyed golf and fishing, but his greatest love was for his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Karen Ann Stopper, his son, Eric Tobias (Laura), his three grandchildren, Anna, Abbie Grace and Elizabeth Tobias, his brother Randall (Deborah), and ten nieces and nephews. His twin brother, Gordon, died at birth.

Public visitation will be on Thursday, August 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 11655 Haverstick Road, Carmel, Indiana 46033. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. A private burial service will take place in Remington, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Roger H. Tobias Scholarship Fund at the Indiana University Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to www.leppertmortuary.com
