Sophie Barbara Luigs Engels
Died July 26th just 3 days after her 95th birthday. She was the daughter of Lawrence R. and Frances M. Luigs and was born in rural southwestern Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years William C. Engels. They had two sons, Bill and Russ with wife Leta and two grandchildren, Courtney and Andrew. Sophie is survived by two sisters, Lillian Brinker and Henrietta DeVito, and two sisters-in-law, Marian DeFontaine and Edna Luigs and many nieces and nephews. Upon moving to Indianapolis in the 1940's, she was employed at the Continental Optical Company. Sophie left that company in 1951 to raise her family. She ended her career at Continental Optical Company as a quality control inspector. During the 1950's and 1960's she was involved in many school activities for her sons. Sophie was a seasonal employee of the Wm. H. Block department store in downtown Indianapolis for many years in the 1970's. Her interests and energies were devoted to the Indianapolis Senior Citizens Center during the 1980's and 1990's where she volunteered hundreds of hours each year. Sophie especially enjoyed volunteering at the I.S.C.C. thrift shop which she helped manage in the later years. Viewing will be held on Monday, July 29th at Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. and visitation from 12 - 1 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 30th at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Indianapolis) at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be donated to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Bill & Russ, I'm so sorry to hear that Aunt Sophie passed away. I have very fond memories of visiting your house when we were all kids and visiting our family in Indianapolis.
