Stephen Hyatt Obituary

Stephen J. Hyatt

Steve Hyatt, 75, passed away at home from ALS on March 18, 2021. Steve was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and Indiana University. He served in the Army and then went on to receive his law degree from the University of Michigan. He practiced law for forty-eight years, the majority as a sole practitioner. Steve was an ardent supporter of public education whether serving on the IPS School Board or dressing as Mr. Pick-a-Pocket for the school carnival.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Caroline (Pennington) Hyatt and is survived by his brother, Michael Hyatt (Joann). Above all, he was the most extraordinarily loving, supportive, funny, and proud husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy lives on in the beautiful and incredibly tight family he built including his wife of 53 years, Sheila (Roe) Hyatt, his children, Stephanie Dellinger (Dow), Stuart Hyatt (Ann-Marie), Sarah Eli (David), and Suzanna Hyatt (David Precise), and his nine grandchildren (Lewis, Leo, Calvin, Oscar, Beatrice, Julian, Fletcher, Mia, Molly).

The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Lemmecka Powell and Shekeli Jones. The family is also most appreciative of the support and care provided by Leah Darling and the professional ALS Clinic team at the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Friends and family may pay their respects at a Covid-safe outdoor Memorial Visitation on Sunday, April 11th from 2:00-4:00 pm, with remarks at 3:00 pm. This will be held in the courtyard of the Holliday Park Nature Center, 6363 Spring Mill Road, Indianapolis, 46260. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF.org

Steve Hyatt was our attorney and friend for over 40 years. Even after we moved to FLORIDA, we could call him for council and we enjoyed just talking to him. We pray God gives his family comfort in this time of grief.

In addition to being a really good friend, Steve was a great colleague and mentor.
Steve & Sheila raised four great kids, and it was always such great fun to get to see them when they would stop by the office after school and sometimes on vacation days.
Steve was very dedicated to his clients, and in his public and community service. I will miss Steve, as will many throughout our community.

Cathy and I remember all the great Saturday mornings at school 84 gym in the winter with Steve coaching and refereeing basketball games. You could always see his beautiful smile and appreciate his kind and gentle manner with the kids. He was an important factor in getting the program started which has continued for many, many years. Great job buddy!!!

I met Stephen 9 years ago out in my yard soon after I moved in as his neighbor. He had such a positive energy and spirit. He was a good man and obviously accomplished a lot in this world. His positivity and light will live on in the many he touched.

...We are so so sorry to hear you have lost your HERO! Even though we didn't know Steve, Jim & I admired that he took Travis under his wing as he began his legal career. Travis often spoke of how he appreciated your Dad's knowledge of the law & his mentorship to guide him to success. He loved Steve & is heartbroken, as we are for you & your family!...
...Sending Strength & Peace!

Steve was the great father of one of my all-time favorite families. I enjoyed his sense of humor and intelligence, but most of all his enthusiasm for Indianapolis, the library, teachers, and his wife and children. His positivity lit up the library and my face every time he came in. My sympathy and best wishes to Sheila, Stephanie, Stuart, Sarah, and Suzanna.

Steve was a neighbor to my Mom, handled her will and estate, and wrote our wills. He was an IPS Board Commissioner when my kids started in IPS. He was my mentor and a supporter when I decided to run for the IPS Board. And eventually he became my boss when he hired me as a legal assistant with zero experience. He was a good man. Condolences to Sheila and the rest of the family. May his memory be a blessing.

Steve was a fraternity brother and wrote the first Will for my wife and me decades ago. He served Indiana Members Credit Union with distinction during my years as a member of the board of directors. I admired his courage with ALS and his upbeat attitude every time I saw him. I never heard him complain about the knuckleball thrown to him in life. God surely is proud of him.

What a great loss for your family our community and the lawyer world! Steve was such a giving soul and took such good care of our Anna as if she was his own. I so enjoyed working for Steve for ten years and he was such a great lawyer and boss. He cared about his clients and his employers so much. He always took care of them in his special way. His family meant so much to him and he always enjoyed his grandkids. I felt privileged to know him and can say he made my life better. He never complained about his illness and I'm sure that you, Sheila, were so supportive and caring about helping him through this terrible time. We are so sorry for all of you losing such a wonderful man. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.
