Terry Hutchens Obituary

Terry Hutchens

Fishers - Longtime Indiana University beat writer, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018, at the age of 60. Terry is survived by his wife, Susan; mother, Dena; sister, Kelly; and two sons, Bryan and Kevin.

Terry was born March 19, 1958, to Dena and Al Hutchens in Portland, Oregon. He met his wife Susan in California in 1984, and they were married on July 5, 1986.

Terry graduated from Indiana University School of Journalism in May of 1989. He began his career with the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, covering the Indianapolis Colts, before he moved to the Indianapolis News. Terry worked for the News, and subsequently the Indianapolis Star, for 27 years, the majority of which was spent covering the Indiana Hoosiers basketball and football programs. Most recently, he worked the Indiana University beat for CNHI Sports Indiana.

A renowned sports writer, Terry was recognized with numerous awards and distinctions during his career. Most notably, Terry was a five-time recipient of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Indiana Sports Writer of the Year Award. Terry also wrote nine books on Indiana Sports - including "Rising From the Ashes: The Return of Indiana Basketball", and three children's books for the youngest IU and Purdue fans.

In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Terry was a coach, author, professor, parishioner and mentor. He coached Catholic Youth Organization high school basketball for both his sons and countless others in the Holy Spirit at Geist Parish. He sang in the church choir for 13 years at the 11:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday. Terry also co-wrote "Never, Ever Quit", a Christian inspirational book, with Jane Hoeppner, wife of the late IU football coach Terry Hoeppner. Always quick to lighten up the room with a joke, Terry was a friend to many. He will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church, 10350 Glaser Way, Fishers, IN, with a Mass of Christian Burial there Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Those who knew Terry knew his passion for both youth athletics and Indiana University journalism. If you wish to make a gift in his memory, his family requests that gifts be made to the Holy Spirit at Geist Athletic Department, 10350 Glaser Way, Fishers, IN 46037 and/or the Indiana University School of Media, Franklin Hall, 601 E. Kirkwood Ave., Bloomington, IN 47405. Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel. www.shirleybrothers.com.

I worked with Terry at Disneyland in the late70´s. I just looked up his name on google and saw he passed away. He was always the prankster and he loved our weekly poker games. I´m very very sorry for his family´s loss. God bless Terry. Gordon Linderoth

So sad, great guy, will be missed by many

December 31, 2018

We worked with Terry at the Fullerton News Tribune in Fullerton , Calif. when he was right out of Esperanza High School...He was a great guy, smart, and fun to work with. Our editor, Bob Lenard, liked his writing so much that soon Terry got to cover not just high school sports, but on occasion Orange County collegiate9CSUF, Fullerton College, etc) and pro sports (Angels, Rams, Cal Surf Soccer) when he was just 19...

Dear Susan and Family: We were so stunned by the news of Terry's passing. Although we only recently had the opportunity to meet and spend time with Terry, we instantly were struck by his big personality, his great sense of humor and his love for his family. We have been moved by the many stories of the many lives he touched.

While we know that the journey ahead will not be an easy one, we know that your loving family, your faith and your lasting memories of Terry will long get you through these days.

Please know that each of you are in our prayers.
