Theodore Boyd Obituary

Theodore Hunter "Ted" Boyd who brought boundless enthusiasm, charm, and good will to his family and friends, his career with the YMCA, and his inspirational writings, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2007, at his Indianapolis home at the age of 81. In 1962, he was lured back to Indianapolis by his YMCA mentor, R.K. Smith, to succeed him as the Fall Creek YMCA Youth Director. After his retirement from the YMCA in the '70's, Ted provided his services and counsel to such social agencies as the Metropolitan Manpower Commission, Central Indiana Council on Aging, Marion County Welfare Department, Operation Head Start, and the Job Corps. Ted was a member of the Indianapolis Urban League, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. the Crispus Attucks Alumni Athletic Association, the Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood Association, Indiana Historical Society, Indiana Black Expo, Kiwanis Club, the Y's Men, the Indiana Children's Wish Fund Steering Committee, the Masonic Lodge in Evanston, and recognized in Who's Who in Black Indianapolis. He was also on the board of the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis and a Deacon at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara; his daughter, Karen Boyd Beamon (Kelvin); sons, Darren Boyd (Deneen) and Theodore Brian Boyd (Briggette); 13 grandchildren, (to whom Ted will always be "Papo"), Duane, Antione, Natasha, Summer, Breena, Gloria, Destiny, Theodore Brian, Jr., Brandon, Mark, Mary, Stacia, and Amber; and five great grandchildren, Kayla, Abigail, Quinton, Thaddeus, and Talliah; and his beloved mother-in-law, Alberta "Peaches" Andry, age 103; also, his "adopted" children, Doris Elliott, Elaine Dairo, and Eddie Fitzpatrick, as well as many relatives and legions of friends. Visitation will be at Stuart Mortuary, 2201 N. Illinois St., Friday, March 16, 2007, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, 418 E. 34th St., on Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Noon, preceded by visitation at 11 a.m., with entombment at the Abbey Mausoleum, Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Ted's memory to the American Cancer Society and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.
