Vaughn Kaforke Obituary

Vaughn Arnold Kaforke 82, of Indianapolis died May 13, 2009. He was born December 6, 1926 in Blue Hill NE to Herbert A. Kaforke and Mildred Arnold Kaforke. Vaughn graduated from Blue Hill High School, and in 1944 joined the US Navy, assigned to the USS Macon. In 1946 while his ship was in Philadelphia Naval Yards for repairs, he met Peggy Plott, a student in the US Army Cadet Nurses Corp. They later married in 1949. After four years of naval service, Vaughn completed his accounting degree and went to work in Roanoke, VA for Creative Packaging, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly Co. In 1951 he was recalled by the navy into the Korean War for two years. Vaughn was transferred by Eli Lilly Co. to Indianapolis in 1967 until retiring after 32 years of service. Surviving Vaughn is his wife of sixty years, Peggy; sons, Steven (Barbara) Kaforke and Timothy (Connie) Kaforke; daughters, Judy (Russell) Zimmerman and Betsy (Fred) Shackelford; brother, Norman Kaforke; sister, Neva Ven Haus; grandchildren, Ashlee Kaforke Locke, Michael Kaforke, Brittney and Christopher Zimmerman and Matthew Shackelford; step-grandchildren, Brian and Nicholas Shackelford and two great-grandchildren, Madelein Shackelford and Gavinn Locke. Vaughn was preceded in death by his sister Neoma Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 PM on Friday, May 15th in Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 12:00 PM Saturday, May 16th in King of Glory Lutheran Church, of which he was a 42 year member (106th Street and Keystone). Visitation will begin at the church on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Interment Oaklawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Alzheimer's Association.
