William Paynter Obituary

William T. Paynter, M.D. died Friday, April 11, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospice. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Indiana University and spend eight years in private practice in Washington County, Indiana. He then returned to the I.U. Medical Center where he completed a residency in psychiatry and in 1969 was named Medical Director of Wishard's Comprehensive Mental Health Center. He served in that capacity until 1971 when he became deputy commissioner of the Indiana Department of Mental Health, and in 1973 he was appointed Indiana State Health Commissioner. In 1979, he became an associate dean of the I.U. School of Medicine and Medical Director of Wishard Hospital. He remained as Medical Director until his retirement in February 1990. Survivors include his wife, Bette; a nephew, William L. Paynter of Salem, IN; nieces, Barbara Jo Paynter of Champaign, IL and Julie Paynter of Walla Walla, WA. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no services. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent Hospice, 8450 North Payne Rd., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

I worked as a case worker at Marion County General Hospital from 1966 until
1968. Dr. Paynter was my employer. He was a lovely man. Very intelligent.
