So many memories of Bill even though we knew each other a short time. I met him in 1968 when we were both on the UW freshman football team. I was this shy white boy from small-town Wisconsin. Till then my only experience with people of color was watching the Green Bay Packers on TV. Of course, I was so introverted, I didn't feel comfortable with the black or other white players on the frosh team. The first week of practice was uncomfortable hardly anyone even said hello to me. That was until one evening after practice. I was walking back to the dorm behind Bill, Harvey Clay, and Elbert Walker. I was maybe ten yards behind the trio when Bill turned around and said, "Come on and Join us." And just like that, I was treated, not as some bohunk from the sticks, but as a regular guy. Without a doubt I have not met a person more gracious, and with a great sense of humor than Bill Poindexter. Even though I haven't seen him since maybe 1971, his passing was a blow to me heart. Bill was a true asset to humanity. And as a bonus, through him I met Harvey Clay who has become a good friend. I'm grateful for having known Bill. (In the attached photo I'm the white boy sitting right next to Bill. We were also next to each other in the 1969 varsity photo)

I only found out about Bill's passing today after doing a search for him. I was on the UW football team with him from 1968-1970. I was this shy white boy from small town Wisconsin, and Bill was one of the first people on the freshman team to befriend me. It happened when was walking back to the dorms after a practice probably ten yards Bill, Harvey Clay and Elbert Walker. Bill turned to me and said, "Come on up here and join us, Mike." What a sweetheart of a person. My life was enriched for having known Bill for only those couple of years.
