Al was always on the go. My earliest memories are of him walking with me to get a milkshake at the local drugstore at Allegheny and Broad Street in Philly. We did a lot of walking back then, after he came home from Korea. We'd take the 2 Bus to movies (Fox Theatre in Center City), bowling alleys, or drive up to amusement parks like the one in Willow Grove, and even rented and rode bikes on the East River Drive. Al enjoyed trips to the Art Museum, plays at the Walnut Street Theatre, and I took him to the Penna Ballet production of Nutcracker a few times in December. We'd go to craft fairs at Head House Square, drive out to the Temple Music Festival in Ambler during the summer, or join in family picnics in Fairmount Park. Sporting events would find us cheering on the Phillies, early on at Connie Mack and later at the Veterans' Stadium. Al was always willing to go to music events, walking to the Uptown Theatre to see James Brown, attending the Robin Hood Dell for the Phila Orchestra performances or jazz shows at the Bijoux Cafe in Center City, or going out to the Main Point to hear a local folk singer. He would tell me about getting to see favorite musical guests at the Latin Casino in Jersey, but I think his most enjoyable thing to do was to visit with friends and family at a really good restaurant. We'd go to the Imperial Inn in Chinatown or bring home take-out from Day's Deli on Spruce Street or cheese steaks from Pat's in South Philly. Movies were another favorite pass time for Al when he slowed down from all that walking or driving: retro movies at the TLA on South Street, Westerns like Shane or The Magnificent Seven, or musicals such as Funny Girl, My Fair Lady. We'd sometimes go to the car show in February, or take Mom to the Phila Flower Show in the spring. There was always something good going on in Philly, and Al got pretty good at finding it (free or nearly free was an added bonus). I can't think of too many areas in and around Philly without remembering the echo of Al's laugh or the flash of his smile, his willingness to pitch in and help out when and where needed. He was generous with his time. As brothers go, Al took good care of me and his favorites became my favorites. He was one of the best. Thanks Al.
Love,
Millie
