Almarin Phillips Obituary

PHILLIPS
ALMARIN, 81, a long-time resident of Wynnewood PA, died on August 26, 2006, at Bryn Mawr Hospital, from pancreatic cancer. Born in Port Jervis NY, March 13, 1925, he was the son of Wendell and Hazel Phillips. Following service in the U.S. Army, 84th Infantry Division in World War II, during which he lost his left arm, he attended the University of Pennsyl-vania. He received a B.S. and an M.A. degree from Univ. of Penn and a Ph.D. from Harvard. Most of Mr. Phillips' academic career was spent at the University of Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Phillips was a major contributor to local Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and served on the Foundation Board of Community College of Philadelphia. For the past 25 years, Mr. Phillips, tended to the maintenance and upkeep of a Main Line meeting facility of Alcoholics Anonymous that served thousands of people in their respective 12-step groups. He had a passion for antique cars and antique clocks and enjoyed restoring Model-Ts and clocks for many years.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Anita Behrle Phillips; by 4 sons, F. Peter Phillips of Montclair NJ, Thomas R. Phillips of Scottsville VA, David J. Phillips of Toronto, Canada, and Charles S. Phillips of Glen Mills PA; by a daughter, Elizabeth L. Phillips of Pittsford N.Y.; by 3 step-sons, Andrew T. Greenberg of Philadelphia; Benjamin F. Behrle, of Wynnewood PA, and Joshua Behrle, of Bryn Mawr PA.; by a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Sanchez of Forks WA; and by 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his first wife Dorothy B. Phillips. His second wife, Carole C. Phillips, died in 2005, and his eldest son, A. Paul Phillips, died in early 2006.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Phillips will be held at 2 P.M., Thursday, September 14, at the Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Avenue, Merion Station PA 19066 (www.tributehouse.com). Gifts in honor of Mr. Phillips may be sent to the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation, 1700 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia PA 19130 or to the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, 1901 Vine St., Suite 111, Philadelphia PA 19103-1189.
