Andy was a unique, brilliant, and uncommon man. I knew him from childhood on and through medical school. Our families were close and our parents good friends.
My memories are many and varied-going to the Philly airport and watching planes take off and land, going in the wee small hours of the morning while Andy rented time on ENIAC, the giant cathode tube early computer, being classmates at Jefferson, double dating with Andy & Elaine. I last saw him at our 25th reunion and only occasionally made contact over the subsequent years.
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Janet or his daughters. My heartfelt prayers and condolences are extended to them and to his grandchildren and sister.

I am saddened by the news of Andy's passing. Andy was a unique and complex man. I had the privilege of knowing him from our teen years through medical school together. Our families were close and our parents were friends.
My memories go back to watching planes land and taking off at the airport in Philly, spending wee morning hours at ENIAC, the big cathode tube computer in the 60s, double dating with Andy and Elaine, and studying in Medical School when he wasn't busy traveling to NYC to help the hospitals there with their computers and teaching. My sympathies go to Janet, his daughters and grandchildren whom I did not have the pleasure of knowing. I will be speaking with Susan with whom I have more recently been in touch.

I was a patient of Doctor Bender's since 1973. I continued to see him up until he retired, at which time I was heartbroken. I was 17 when I was diagnosed and saw him quite often. I learned of his daughters, I met Elaine when she helped out in his office, and saw his sadness when she became ill. Then he had major health setback but finally was better and once again saw patients. Since his retirement I have thought of him often and wondered how he was doing? I am so sorry to hear of his passing, please accept my deepest sympathies. He will be missed.
