I am so sorry Baby Rose for the loss of this fine man. I remember as a kid watching him studying at Tenth St. and to Michael who did so much for my brother Carmen my heart goes out to you and the rest of the family, after all weare cousins. LOVE YOU ALL

December 4, 2013

My family and I were so devastated and saddened to learn of the death of the man we called "the Captain". My husband nicknamed him that because he always wore a captain's hat. You all have a special place in our hearts -- from the days when Joe and Julie rented our upstairs for many summers and our son always wanted to hang out with "Mamma Julie" to the days when Judge DeFino would walk down Monterey to sit on the bench and we would reminisce about the days when everyone would sit in a circle on the beach. He always had a kind word to say and was genuinely interested in my children Ryan and Donna and what was going on in their lives as well as how my mom Doris Wade was feeling. We all on Monterey Ave will miss him a great deal this summer. Mrs. DeFino will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

I have always admired His Honor, but his sudden passing just made me realize how much I loved him. I loved him as a jurist, as a mentor, and as a friend. Judge DeFino was always kind and generous with his time, his knowledge, his jokes (hee hee) and most importantly his compassion and life experience. I had the great pleasure of appearing before him many times. I always came away learning something. We would not always agree, and in hindsight I was a young green lawyer making lots of rookie mistakes, but he NEVER made me feel that way. A true gentleman he was kind and set me straight. I was lucky to also get to meet many of his grandkids who would stop by the courtroom to see him. He was always be so proud and would brag about their many accomplishments. I had the honor of meeting Mrs. DeFino at the Judge's retirement party and some other functions but I always felt I knew her because the Judge always spoke so fondly of her and his entire family.

To say I was heartbroken when I heard this news this past Sunday is an understatement. I am profoundly sorry for the loss and pain the Defino family is going through right now. I will continue to pray for healing. Rest in Peace Your Honor and Thank You for all of your gifts.

The neighborhood, city, and world has lost one of the last TRUE gentlemen. The stories of school days between the Judge and my Father will never be forgotten. All of our personal memories will be cherished and passed on. The family can take solace in knowing that your worth in life is measured by how you are remembered - and the Judge was worth more than a king's ransom.

I met Mr.& Mrs. DeFino years ago as a teenager. At such a young age, growing up in politics, I don't recall many real people.....when I heard what happened, I remembered a wonderful couple that always made me smile. I haven't seen them in years but some people make lasting impressions on your heart. My prayers are with your family as I know how very difficult a journey this will be, know you are cared for by so many.

Having lost my Father when I was a teenager, I looked up to my friends Fathers for guidance. I learned much from all of them on how to carry yourself as an adult. Mr Defino was always in a good mood, always dressed impeccably, & always ready to shake your hand. He showed me integrity & dignity. He will be missed by all who knew him. God Bless him & his Family.
