Brad Schoener Obituary

Brad S. Schoener, 46, of West Chester, a charismatic music teacher and performer, died March 19, 2009, at home of leiomyosarcoma, a rare, soft-tissue cancer. Since 1992, Mr. Schoener divided his time teaching instruments and directing bands at the Bywood, Highland Park, and Stonehurst Hills Elementary Schools in the Upper Darby School District. "He's known as the 'Music Man of Upper Darby,' " Susan Nitz, a parent who had five children study under Mr. Schoener, said in an Inquirer profile after he received the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation National Teacher of the Year Award in 2007. Mr. Schoener was recognized for his commitment to teaching music despite inadequate facilities and skimpy budgets.

I learned under Mr. Schoner as a student at Stonehurst Hills elementary in the 90's. He was one of the best teachers I ever met in my school career. You could tell he really had a passion for what he did, and he really cared about bringing that to students. He will be greatly missed, and I am saddened by his loss both because he was a wonderful man, and because of how many future generations will miss out on the delight of learning from him.

Mr. Schoener was one of the most inspirational people i have ever met. He fire-started my passion for music back when i was in the second grade. I am now in the 11th grade, i've been instructed by many great musicians, but none come close to him. Every time i pick up a piece of music I think of this great man.

Mr. Schoener was the best music teacher and only music I ever had. I wish I could have said goodbye.

We were saddened to hear of Brad's death, and sorry we were too far away to attend the Memorial. We saw him when he was young, but both I (Gary) and my sister Carol were gone from Lansdowne when he accomplished so much as an adult. Our parents Gar and Doris Schoener kept us up on Brad's accomplishments. Gar himself died a couple of years ago and mother now lives out with me in Minneapolis (where I have lived since 1966) My sister Carol lives in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois. Our best wishes and condolences to all.

I graduated from Temple University with Brad - he made all those crazy musid ed classes a blast. I'm sorry we didn't keep in touch after college, but I've followed his amazing career as the "Music Man of Upper Darby". I'm so proud to have known him. He was surely a gift to his students and family.

I grew up with Brad from birth on. He was just "nice" all the time even throughout high school when I was the "little sister". I kept up with his health issues via my mother and kept him and his family in my prayers. I will continue to keep the family in my prayers...what a void there will be except for all the happy memories of a life very well lived!
The Lord be with you,

Mr. Schoener's wife, Jennifer, was my daughter's instrumental teacher when she was in elementary school. At one of the spring concerts, my daughter and two other clarinetists were playing "Annie Laurie". Toward the end of the piece, out came Mr. Schoener dressed in his kilt and playing "Annie Laurie" on the bagpipes. What a beautiful memory! Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

I worked with Brad at Stonehurst Hills Elementary School. I will never forget how he inspired students to join the band by walking around the playground playing the various band instruments that the students could learn. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

When I moved to Upper Darby School District in elementary school, Mr. Schoener made me feel welcome in the band and in the school. Some of my favorite memories from when I knew him were how he encouraged me to play from my heart and not from the music on the page and how he dressed up in his kilt for our elementary school Halloween parade and played bagpipes for us to "march" to. He was always around pushing kids to do their best, through words, music, and his actions. He was a true hero in Delaware County and will be missed.

I didnt't know the Shoener Family personally, but Upper Darby being my home for so many years, and being an alumi of Beverly Hills, and a previous Student of Upper Darby High, i've heard good things of him. My prayers go to his family. I know this is a difficult time for them, and i can share their pain becuase my mother passed in 2005 from the same cancer. she being only 43 at the time. My blessings are with him and his family family.

I did not know him. I am a long time runner in the Distance Run. I, and so many others, appreciated his playing to cheer us on. He brought smiles to thousands of strangers each year at the race. We did not know his name, but his presence was felt and appreciated.

Brad Schoener was such a great teacher, inspiration, and friend. My son had Mr. Schoener for his first band teacher at Stonehurst Hills Elementary School, as did my daughter. Today my son is a musician studying for his degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston. We, no doubt, have Brad Schoener to thank for giving Jamie his start. His legacy will live on in students and musicians like my kids. Thanks so much for all you have done. Cindy, Dan, Jamie and Ryan Spalding
