Daniel Cox Obituary

Daniel Angus Cox

Daniel Angus Cox, last-born of Ruth Heath and Rev. Julius J. Cox's six children, arrived in the wee hours of June 30th, 1962. The exhausted father plopped an over-sized Raggedy Andy doll atop the roadside mailbox, jammed a fishing pole into Andy's hands to signify the boy's birth, and went to bed. Next morning, the 5 year-old across the street took one amazed look and hollered, "Mama look - the preacher's baby came -and it's too big for the mailbox!" And so Danny was, for 51 sweet years, too big, too eccentric, too talented for any box. Instead, he carved out niches that fit him.

As Daniel Angus Cox, he was a talented actor fulfilling his dream, in the process of moving from way-off Broadway to a substantial career in film.

As "Angus", he was an exciting singer-songwriter, crafting and performing a trove of songs that will live on - though "I'm An 8-Track Guy In A CD World" might need an update some day.

As Danny or Dan-O, he was his mother's darling; and by any name, he was to each of five proud siblings, "my little brother," even after he outgrew us all.

Daniel Angus Cox was a man full-grown who never lost his innocence, his kindness, his great faith in the goodness of people. Sweetness and light shone through him into the world around him.

Dan outlived his beloved mother and father, Ruth Heath Cox and Reverend Julius Jesse Cox II, and his treasured sister, Christian Gillis Cox.

Danny leaves in sorrow his brothers and sisters: Julius Jesse "Jake" Cox (Mary Carver); Burton Heath Cox (Patricia Collins); Frances Ann Cox; Floranelle Blackburn. He treasured Jon, Jeff, and Sarah Heggen as brothers and sister, along with cousin Ken Peacock and wife Sylvia. Dan adored his nieces and nephews: Liz Johnson (Tom); and Kelley Garner (Jake); Ross Cox Norton; Heath Blackburn (Maighen Hosey); and James Julius "J.J." Blackburn. Dan's family wants to especially thank David Klein for his friendship and valiant efforts.

Danny loved many, many others and held them in his arms as kin. The magnitude of that list doesn't divide his love, but multiplies it. A lot of those names may be seen on Facebook.com at Daniel Angus Cox.

Daniel Angus Cox, that harmonica-blowing, drum-beating, guitar-thrumming singer of his own life-song, that actor who was the stubborn author of his own best lines, that happy boy who loved so much and so well, passed from this earthly life far too soon, on January 2nd, 2014. If you didn't know him, I wish you had. If you did know him, it's very likely he thought of you as one of his blessings. If you knew Dan, I'd say you were lucky. But Dan would say he was lucky. That's what made him who he is, that sweet, gentle soul.

The world wobbles a little off its axis as we feel the loss of such a great kind sweet spirit! Fond memories harken me back to Dannys drummer days at Smittys and Finales in the early 80's and to Danny acting in many Shakespeare in the Park plays in the late 90's. Altho we lost touch, I always heard from ATL friends and Tally locals that he was thriving in thE city, NYC. Many times we shared the lighted path of the 'thumbnail moon', a phrase he coined to me.
I am only comforted in knowing that he may be there to greet me when it's my time to pass, smiling that cheshire (who ate the canary) cat grin! Rock on Angus!

Sincerest sympathies to his family and all of those who knew and loved him.

One of the positive things about being a teacher is that we get to know some really extraordinary people. Daniel will always be one of those students I will think of fondly, always remembering the twinkle in his eyes and the beautiful smile on his face. His passing has reminded us all of the fragility of life and how difficult it is to lose someone who is so respected and loved. We have lost a promising talent, a loving soul, and a genuinely caring man. I send sincere sympathies to Daniel's family and those of us who were fortunate enough to have him in our lives.

Oh Danny, you left too soon, we weren't finished with our conversation and we still had to take that ride through Tom Brown Park. You enjoy your celebration home and I'll see you when I get there, we'll catch up then. Love you.

Heartbreaking news when Lianne K. Coleman sent me a FB message at around 9:58 pm EST that our fellow actor friend, Daniel Angus Cox passed away today in Atlanta area on his way to NYC where he had been in Florida visiting family for the holidays. OMG!Life is too short & I started crying after verifying it to Canada Anne Biondich who got the news from Charles Goonan. Turns out that Dawn Ressy says he had a "flu" (get your flu shot folks) and stopped breathing on his way back to New York. I was in shock from the time I got the news from Lianne and cried after verifying to Anne.
The last time I talked to him was when we worked on the film set of "Run All Night" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2199571/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ... ) last November 13, 2013 located at Pennsylvania 6 restaurant in NYC (http://www.opentable.com/pennsylvania-6).
He was very happy and he was a stand-in to one of the supporting actors on that film of Liam Neeson. We talked in the holding area after our dinner and he shared to me he got paid very well with the residuals of his famous past commercial - Dan the City Wide man ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss7hxXyaLkg .. )
It was a happy goodbye we exchanged in the holding as we hugged and kissed on the cheek. OMG!I cannot find the right words to say now that you are gone, Dan. I am crying again. RIP Daniel...See you again when I see you. You will be missed by all of us your friends in the acting business here in "New York City-The City that Never Sleeps".

Danny you were such a wonderful friend-so kind, sweet, always a kind word and a smile on your face no matter what. The last time you were home and we got together, as the group was breaking up, you took each of us aside for a kind word, a hug and a kiss and said you'd see us next time. That was our last time and I will miss you sweet one. Rest In peace my friend.

Really sad to hear of Danny's sudden death, but the obit included here is almost as if he penned it himself. I was indeed lucky to know him, and forever grateful for his encouragement.

My heart is sad. Danny was always a delight growing up on Devon, helping build elaborate driving machines in our driveway, and thinking of fun activities for everyone. It has been a pleasure to know a bit of his successes in acting. Prayers of love for each of you. Maxine Gaskins

I will always remember when I met Danny at church when moving here in 1970. He made me feel so welcomed and was my buddy right away. Danny was always the one who said hello to everyone - he knew no strangers. I reconnected with him on facebook many years ago and am so thankful I did. He was a wonderful guy who will be missed by everyone who knew him. God gained another wonderful angel.

May loving thoughts and wonderful memories give you all strength at this difficult time. My prayers are with you all.
