Daniel Ernest Gold

1936 - 2022

Gold Daniel Ernest Was born on March 3rd, 1936, in Portland, Oregon to Mildred and Lou Gold. He attended Stanford University and then went east to Harvard Law School where he met his wife of 60 years Lesley Madfis. He served in the US Army as an attorney member of the JAG Corps and then as an assistant to the General Counsel of the FAA. He was hired by Post-Newsweek Stations as General Counsel, and so began his career in broadcasting. He was Vice President and General Manager of affiliate stations in DC, West Hartford, and Philadelphia. As a station manager he was responsible for hiring the first African American broadcast anchor in 1969, implementing 5 minutes of news in sign language for the deaf each morning, airing news in Spanish daily, as well as authoring and delivering thoughtful and provocative on-air editorials. His career grew to include work as President of Comcast Cable, Inc., President of Knight Ridder Broadcasting, CEO of The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Chairman and Director of Dynamic Broadband and President of Leonard Whitcup, Inc. Dan was a member of The Delaware Valley's Pioneers in Broadcasting, and served on the boards of directors of The National Association of Broadcasters, The National Cable Television Assoc., The TV Bureau of Advertising, Entercom Communications and C-SPAN. Died on Aug. 25, 2022. He loved dogs, the outdoors and most of all his family. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren. Dan is survived by his wife Lesley, daughter Peg (Aron), son Timothy (Sheila), grandchildren Louis, Rebecca, Kyra, Allison, Abe, Hope, Sydney and Audrey and sister Harriet (Dick). He will forever be in our hearts. Services will be held Sunday, August 28th at West Laurel Chapel Visitation 10 A.M. Ceremony 11 A.M.
