David ADAMANY Obituary

ADAMANY

David Walter, scholar, educator, administrator, and civil rights advocate, passed away on November 10, 2016, at the age of 80. David was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, on September 23, 1936, to Walter Joseph and Dora Marie Adamany, both of Lebanese immigrant descent. He was the oldest of 4 Adamany children, including 1 brother and 2 sisters. After graduating from high school, he received a full scholarship to Harvard Univ., where he completed his artium baccalaureus (A.B.) degree in government (magna cum laude, 1958) and juris doctor (J.D.) degree from Harvard Law School (1961). He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, under the advisement and mentorship of Dr. Leon Epstein, where he received his magister scientiae (M.S.) and philosophiae doctor (Ph.D.) degrees in political science (1963, 1967). David W. Adamany's early career was marked by a strong commit-ment to public service and good governance in the state of Wisconsin. He served as special assistant to the attorney general (1961-1963) and pardon counsel to governor John W. Reynolds (1963). At the age of 27, he was appointed as a member of Wisconsin's public service commission (1963-1965), where he made history as the youngest person to have ever served in that role. In Wisconsin governor Patrick J. Lucey's administration, David served as special advisor to the governor and Wisconsin secretary of revenue (1973-1976). As an academic and educational administrator, David served numerous institutions throughout the country. Soon after graduating from the University of Wisconsin, David joined Wesleyan University, where he served as professor of government (1967-1972) and dean of the college (1969-1970). He returned to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to serve as professor of political science (1972-1977), before going on to serve California State Univ., at Long Beach as professor of political science and vice president for academic affairs (1977-1980). During 1980-1982, David joined the University of Maryland system, where he (Continued)

David was generally unpopular with tenure-track faculty. He cared about STUDENTS more! What's more important? The students! He was instrumental in the construction of an undergraduate library on Gullen Mall, just a few hundred feet from the WSU Student Union building.

The first time I met Dr. Adamany, it was in a Wayne State University parking lot at the site of the razed Mackenzie Hall (administration building), 1992. He was very approachable, considering that he was a University president!

Hello, my apologies for not knowing this sooner, or writing to you before now. My name is Greg L. Bass, Dr. Adamany was one of my English professors at Whitewater in 1967-68. He was teaching courses in John Milton and I took both courses. He taught me deeply about the idea of aesthetics in literature and art. He was most inspiring, and now at age 71, I still look back upon the inspiring and deep thought processes he taught me. I have since attained nearly three masters degrees; completed MSHCA, MDiv, and MFA in poetry. While some of the professors questioned my application of physics analytics to literature, he inspired me and encouraged my continuation of writing. I have also completed three certifications in actuarial work from Milliman U.S.A actuaries. My wandering but driven course in life has taken me across the country, and deep into the African wilds. I've written a book, "9 Days with Omari," as well as another "Down on All Fours," published under the authorship of G.L. Bass-author/poet/photographer. I tell you this because in all of my work and endeavors, I've always remembered the inspiration from Dr. Adamany, our discussions, and the papers he inspired me to write regarding aesthetics in "Paradise Lost." He was truly a life changing teacher who brought me to understand the process of analytical thought applied to the idea of beauty. I remember what he said to me once and have repeated it to others many, many, times in my life: God does not create without a sense of beauty. So, I write this to you to say, a great man has passed, but he lives on in my life in my continued efforts to achieve writing excellence in poetry, and apply the thought processes in business and in life. You can find me on linked inn if you like-sorry once again for finding this out so late-Greg L. Bass

I am deeply, deeply saddened by the news of Professor Adamany's passing. As a Harvard Law grad, University President, brilliant lawyer, and law school professor, Dr Adamany could have been as arrogant as he wanted - but he was just the opposite - personable, witty, charming. He treated everyone with genuine respect and kindness. A true definition of the word "Gentleman.

He was very spry in the fall of '13 when I took him. He was the only professor in my career at Temple that wrote me two page responses to my 8 page essay (for every student - 25 in the class). This demonstrated a level of dedication to his students rare to find. '

After class, when everyone cleared out, we'd slowly walk and chat all the way from Gladfelter Hall to his office on Liacouras Walk. I really savored every chance I got to talk to him one on one. I still have a pocket Constitution and Declaration of Independence he gave each of us. One our best one on one conversations was nothing to do with the class I was in. It was about the Lincoln's handling of the Civil War and slavery. As we walked, Dr. Adamany remarked "There was no separating the two; slavery was the issue at hand. The Civil War was less about anything else than it was about slavery." Rest In Peace, Professor. I'll see you again.

I was in his State Government & Politics course offered at University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. A great teacher, mentor, and motivator. He confided that he read at least 45 minutes of non-fiction every night, after his head hit the pillow. For not always good and not always bad, I have followed his example, and it has served me well. The meaning and purpose of his life still influences me and the many privileged to have known him.

So very sorry to read of David's passing, Tom. You know how highly I thought of him. He was the smartest person I have ever known and I have so many great memories of us working together for Pat Lucey at the Capitol in Madison. David made such an enormous contribution to our local and national societies. A bright light has just gone out in this world and he will be missed.
