DEBORAH LORD Obituary

September 12, 2020,

formerly of Moorestown N.J., passed away peacefully surrounded by family in her Cushing Maine home. She will be remembered as a kind and compassionate person who loved her family and the natural world. Debbie graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a BA in 1978. She received her Master of Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Early in her career she worked as a geologist for SMC- Martin and at the US Geological Survey until 1988. While raising her family, she pursued her true love, environmental education. During this time, she worked for or served with many groups including Rutgers University, Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Sanctuary, the Pompeston Creek Watershed Association and Palmyra Cove Environmental Foundation. After her children were grown, she began a career as a teacher. She taught sixth grade science at Moorestown Friends school for four years. Retiring to Cushing Maine in 2015 she worked as a substitute teacher in the Rockland School District and ran an after school environmental program at the Cushing School. She was an avid kayaker and hiker and was her happiest in the outdoors. Hundreds of school children and countless acres of land along with animals of every type felt her love and were better from her efforts. She is survived by her husband of forty years Craig, son Nathaniel Lord, daughter in law Megan Lord (nee Madara), daughter Augusta Van Tongeren and son in law Gregory Van Tongeren. She is also survived by three sisters, Sue McTyier of Ticonderoga NY, Linda Veblen of Waldoboro Maine, Sheri Gorsen of Washington DC and a brother Keith Grant of Elverson Pa., mother in law Margaret Lord of Topsham Maine, and sister in law Jennifer Gallogly of Cherry Hill NJ. Debbie was a gentle and kind soul. Although I only knew her for a few years I had a deep respect for her. She will be greatly missed.

I’m so sorry to hear about Deb’s passing. She was an environmental mentor to my daughters and me and I will always be grateful for everything she’s taught me especially in saving the wetlands. Her legacy lives on in the way I treasure nature and make the effort to reduce my carbon footprint. She was the first woman scientist that I ever met! I loved that she drove a hybrid car before it was mainstream. Our escapades together to save wetlands in Moorestown will forever be etched in my memory! Deb was simply put a wonderful person.

Deb & I started teaching at MFS in the same year. We went through orientation together and encouraged one another in our new adventures. I wish I had gotten to know her better but I do know two things about her for sure: she loved nature and she loved teaching the kids about it. So sorry for your loss.

Augusta, Nathaniel and Craig, I am so sorry for your loss. Debbie made this world a better place by her very presence. Becoming friends at MFS, she and I ventured onto several nature walks outside of school. She made me so much more aware of the natural world I live in and its beauty by pointing out birds I had never before noticed and, passing by what I thought was a weed, she would explain what its name was and the medicinal use it had. She focused on people, too. When she talked to someone, she listened intently and warmly with all her attention, a rarity in today's world. She was also practical, honest, and down to earth. Someone before me in this guest book said that Debbie was a lovely person. I couldn't agree more. Although we didn't see each other much after she went to Maine, I will miss her. I pray that you will find comfort in this trying time.

Craig, Nathan, Augusta and all of your family, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Deb was a beautifully kind and brilliant person. It was an honor to get to know her. Though my working with her was relatively brief her She made me feel close and showed me genuine warmth every time I would run in to her. She was lovely. I wish for you all to have peace and in time, happiness In all of your found memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Karen Applegate
