Dieter FORSTER Obituary

FORSTER Dieter Dec. 7, 1938 – Nov. 6, 2025 Age 86, of Philadelphia, PA. Dieter died peacefully at home in Center City after several months of declining health. He was born to Willi and Martha (Kienzle) Forster in Gaildorf, Germany and graduated from the University of Stuttgart before earning a PhD at Harvard University in 1969. After teaching several years at Columbia University and the University of Chicago, Dieter joined the physics faculty at Temple University in 1974, becoming a Full Professor in 1977. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2017. While at Temple he was for many years the Director of the Honors Program and was awarded the Great Teacher Award and named Professor of the Year (Honors). He was the author of an acclaimed book on theoretical physics in 1975 which is still in print and served for decades on the Franklin Institutes Committee on Sciences and the Arts (Physics Cluster). He was a member of the Germantown Cricket Club and the Franklin Inn Club. Primarily a scientist and proudly a teacher, Dieter was also an avid biker, tennis player, kayaker, skier (preferably alpine) and a decent piano player. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sara "Sammy" Wheeler Forster, a sister Sigrid Giering (Oswald), a brother Uli Forster (Gabi), a sister-in-law Sue W. Mason (Dwight), a brother-in-law Fayette Brown and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Gerda Beyer and sister-in-law Laurie W. Brown. His family is grateful for the care he received from the Univ. of PA hospice program and a number of dedicated Liberian caregivers. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. (JACOB F. Dieter was a wonderful mentor to me as a physics major at Temple in the early 1990s. He kept my excitement for astrophysics alive, even though there were no astrophysics classes at Temple, taught me a lot about physics, encouraged my efforts in the Honors program, and in general made a large, urban school feel personal and welcoming.

I still fondly remember one time he told me about reading Chandrasekhar's book on stellar structure and then taking the time to explain to me how one could use hydrostatic equilibrium to calculate the structure of a star. While he may have read and thought about this out of his personal interest, it wouldn't surprise me if he'd done this just because he thought I'd be captivated -- and I was! He was so dedicated to enriching the lives of students. His attention and support was a huge factor in my successful pursuit of graduate school and then a career in astrophysics, and he will always be a model for how I encourage my students.

Dieter literally shaped the person I am today. I was one of the first batch of Honor's students under Dieter and Ruth's partnership. From the moment Dieter met me, he seemed to have decided that he was on my team for life. He became a mentor in my life that opened so many doors for me. Even more importantly, he helped lay a foundation of confidence that I will always carry.

His life was also an important model of how to be a good person. He was curious about life, and encouraged a sense of joy in those around him. His deep love for his wife Sammy and deep respect for the women in his life was really important to me as a young woman studying in a deeply male dominated field. His behavior was a standard that I expected by my male colleagues and friends. He has an army of former students who were touched by his life, and his spirit lives in all of us. The greatest legacy I can image for such a generous person.

Dieter Forster
What an impressive man, what a rich life. Among all his accomplishments and exuberances and joyful ways of being present in life, there´s one that stands out for me. That is, he was a wonderful master of conversation. Dieter could talk to anyone about anything. How enjoyable it was just to engage in conversation, and how comfortable he made it. This is a lost art in our time, but never with Dieter. What a wonderful presence, and we will miss him greatly.

It was always a pleasure coming to Honors and hanging out with Dieter and Ruth. It was my distinct honor to protest when the administration ousted Dieter from Honors for his passion and commitment. It was a protest joined by so many and we also did it out of love and intellectual commitment to the program he and Ruth initially built. I smile everytime I am in the wonderful Honors' spaces that continue to. be a site of curiosity, friendship, and play at the heart of Temple's campus. Dieter made this legacy possible. He hired Ruth... what more can I say! with love and deep sorrow. I will miss him on his bike, his laughter, and his wit! xo Laura
