It is with profound sadness that, belatedly, I have only just learned of Dr Abouna's death. I was neither a medical colleague nor a patient, but was privileged to have been a friend of Dr Abouna during the years that he was the liver transplant surgeon at the Western General Hospital here in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr Abouna was a perfect gentleman and a loving family man who was held in the very highest regard by all who knew him. RIP dear George.

I was working with Prof. George Abouna at the Arabian Gulf University. George was my Dean. I learnt a lot from his wisdom, knowledge and professional attitude. He was one of the finest persons I ever met in my life. I only recently came across the news that George has passed away. My sincere condolences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Dr. George Abouna on this anniversary of his passing. Although I only knew him for the short time that I worked for him at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, he left a lasting impression on me as a most dedicated doctor who worked tirelessly on behalf of his patients. May he Rest In Peace.

I just saw that George had passed. His passion was unique he was obsessed with achieving the best outcomes for his patients and he took great risks.I personally very much enjoyed his company while I understand that actually working with him was not easy if one was not up to his standards. He had a great and successful life and was immensely proud of his family.Rest in peace George.

Dear Cathy,
It was many years ago at the University of Calgary Medical School that I was hired to be a research assistant for Dr. Abouna. Along with yourself, Eva Rychter and Dave Kinniburgh, a medical student at the time, we were his team at the medical school. I only recently came across his obituary notice, and I want to offer my sincerest condolences to you and your family and will keep you in my prayers. I will never forget George Abouna and his tireless dedication to his patients. He was an amazing man, and I feel privileged to have known him.

I am writing this upon seeing this obituary in April 2017 and hoping it is passed along to George Abouna's family. Dr. Abouna gave my sister the gift of life by transplanting my kidney to her in 1974. She lived for 28 years after that, where she had only been given six months to live when her kidneys failed. Her kidney was named "George" and we had wonderful anniversaries. She passed away from cancer in 2003, however her daughter told me that the kidney did not have cancer. Dr. Abouna was an amazing, wonderful man, who both my sister and I loved always.

Dear Cathy. My mom received a kidney transplant by Dr. Abouna at Foothills Hospital. My parents, Floyd and Pat, thought so highly of both of you. I just read about Dr. Abouna's passing and felt the need to reach out with our sympathy. And to tell you how blessed we were to have known this kind, caring, humble and talented man. So blessed to have known both of you.

The loss of our father, my Dad, Dr. George Abouna, has been very sad. It's surreal that he is no longer here to talk with, to see, and to hug. But at the same time all of the great memories of Dad brings me joy. And so too does all of very kind words shared by everyone. Hearing about the experiences you have had with Dad and your affection for him are very heart warming. Dad would have been so happy to know you thought so well of him. I share with you one of many, many favorite photos of Dad. Thank you.

My sincere condolences to the family. I pray for the your strength and peace at this difficult time.
Dr. Abouna was a pioneer. Gifted. Many lives were saved with his skilled surgical precision but he was more than that.
I worked closely with him as he built the Transplant Program at Hahnemann, along side Dr. Kumar ,Mary McSorely,Kathy Cahill and many others. We were a team. He taught me about dedication to a cause, a love for what we were doing. He made a difference in this world. I have so many funny stories about our time together.
After he left Hahnemann I saw him on three separate occasions....each time he brought me back to purpose of action and reminded me of the importance of the work we do in transplantation. I always felt elevated after our conversations. He was an innovator. He couldn't wait to tell me about something new he discovered. I was proud to have known him. I am a transplant nurse today because of his influence on my life land for that I am truly grateful. Rest in peace sir. God Bless.

My name is Yuhanna Aboona. I first became clearly aware of my cousin George in the late fifties while on an Iraqi government fellowship to study mechanical engineering at Manchester University. I got to know of him through the letters addressed by the Iraqi Embassy in London, wrongly posted to me.
I got to meet him and to know him much better many years later when he started his Arab Board and other medical and lecturing trips to Baghdad while stationed in the Gulf. That is when the extended Aboona family also met his wife Cathy. We were all always excited to see him, and very proud to receive him. We passed many enjoyable evenings together, and did one or two trips together, including one to Alkosh (our historic hometown), where he was born and where his mother continued to live at the time.
Over the years I met George in several parts of the World, including Kuwait and Bahrein, and even, passingly, in Geneva/Switzerland and Milan/Italy. But I got to meet him more often in the USA after the year 2001 when Khalida, my wife, and I settled down in California.
Even though our meetings with George were less frequent that we would've liked, we all felt him to be a close member of the family. He made every effort to see us and was always very warm towards us all. We so much remember the week-end he spent with us in Modesto, California more than ten years ago.
I personally consider him to have been an important part of my life. He was a person not only to be admired but also to be loved and emulated. He was an icon of the Aboona family. I therefore now feel as if I've lost a part of myself.
May God reward him with eternal peace for the good life he lived and the good work he did. With our deepest condolonces to Cathy and the family.
