MAHONEY, O.S.F.S. REV. GERARD J., O.S.F.S. REV. GERARD J. MAHONEY, O.S.F.S., a professed member of the Wilmington-Philadelphia Province of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales for 58 years, died on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Charles and Marie (Mullen) Mahoney on August 19, 1943, he attended St. Columba Parish School in Philadelphia and entered the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales after graduating from Northeast Catholic High School in 1961. Fr. Mahoney earned a BA in English from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, completed his studies for priesthood at De Sales School of Theology in Hyattsville, MD, and was ordained a priest on June 5, 1971. Fr. Mahoney was engaged in secondary education for nearly 40 years, serving at Father Judge High School, Philadelphia, Holy Name High School, Reading, PA, and Salesianum School, Wilmington, DE. After leaving secondary education in 2010, he ministered as a parochial vicar at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, and chaplain at Nativity Preparatory School, Wilmington. Fr. Mahoney retired in 2015 and was most recently assigned to the Oblate community at Childs, MD. Fr. Mahoney is survived by his brothers, John and Charles Mahoney; sister Eileen (Mahoney) Grisafi; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by the local Oblate community in the Oblate daily chapel at Annecy Hall, Childs, MD on Wednesday evening, October 6, 2021. On Thursday morning, a paraliturgical service will be held at HICKS HOME FOR FUNERALS, Elkton, MD, for members of Fr. Mahoney's immediate family, with interment following in the Oblate Cemetery, Childs. Due to recently-reinstated Covid-19 protocols at the Childs community, all services will be in private.
