HARRY A. "JACK" , age 88, died July 10, 2015 following a brief illness. Jack, a longtime resident of Cherry Hill, NJ, was born in Lewistown, PA and educated at Lewistown High School. Following his dis-charge from the US Army Air Corps in 1946 as a Sergeant, Mr. Howell attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA where he majored in History and Pre-Law. In 1951 Mr. Howell joined the Federal Bureau of Investi-gation and served as a Special Agent Supervisor until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Howell was employed upon his retirement by Philadelphia Newspapers, parent company of the "Inquirer" and "Daily News" where he headed the Security Department. Mr. Howell traveled on security matters for the Knight Ridder newspaper chain.
While in the FBI Mr. Howell was assigned to Washington, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City and Philadelphia where he handled primarily Organized Crime Investiga-tions. Mr. Howell was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and served as a Vice-President of the Mid-Atlantic Region, as a Member-At-Large on the Society's Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Philadelphia Chapter on a number of occasions. Mr. Howell was a member of the Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Southern New Jersey Chiefs of Police Association, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Trinity Presbyterian Church, Cherry Hill, NJ.
Mr. Howell enjoyed travelling, golf, tennis, gardening and spending time at the family's summer home in Sea Isle City, NJ. He was an avid supporter of Penn State Football and attended most home games for the past thirty five years.
Mr. Howell is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joan C. Howell (nee Conlin), 2 daughters, Valerie Hecker (Gregory) of Collingswood, NJ; Andrea Hayes of Haddon Twp., NJ, 2 sons, Robert Howell of Clarksboro, NJ and Byron Howell of Waynesburg, PA. Another son, Gregory, died in 1997. Mr. Howell is also survived by 5 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends will gather Tuesday morning 10 to 10:45 A.M. in Trinity Presby-terian Church, 499 Route 70 East, Cherry Hill, NJ. Memorial service Tuesday 11 A.M. Interment private. Mr. Howell introduced me to the game of tennis over 50 years ago, still playing today. My Dad and FBI colleague told me he was one of the "Good Guys" and of course he was right. Respectfully, The Sabino Carone Family.
