HOWARD ESKIN Obituary

ESKIN
HOWARD B.

No Ordinary Life: Renaissance Man, avid Bird Photographer, self-proclaimed curmudgeon and raconteur, Howard B. Eskin, age 82, died peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Friday, February 24, 2017. Born in New York City on December 26, 1934 to Samuel and Berenice (Fleischer) Eskin, he spent his formative years on the shores of Long Island (Jones Beach) and attended schools in Freeport and Baldwin. Howard studied History, Mathematics and Engineering at the University of Rochester, and then continued his studies in Business, Education and Ornithology at Cornell and Princeton. Serving in the US Army as a language instructor in Kaiserslautern, Germany, he met the "most beautiful girl" he had ever seen, Rosemarie, before he was honorably dis-charged in 1958.
He had a distinguished career in industry and business. High-lights include: working as an engineer on Hamilton Standard design team that built life support systems for NASA, working for Wall Street's F.I. DuPont as a Limited Partner and then joining Automatic Data Processing Inc. (ADP) in 1975. During his tenure with ADP, he was a GM and Division VP and his many recognitions included receiving the President's Club award more than 25 times. He was a leader in developing innovative solutions for improving client service and was excellent at selecting and developing leaders for the company, many of whom attained senior level positions. Howard was an out-standing fly fisherman and fly tier, with photos of his flies published in several books including Brook Trout by Nick Karas. Fly-fishing and fly-tying were passions he shared with his son Steven, son-in-law Robert, and many others with whom he shared his time, equipment, flies, and teaching. Howard's passion for fly-fishing allowed him to visit some of the world's most pristine land-scapes including New Zealand and Russia. These vistas would prove to be the muse for Howard's love of photography. There wasn't a place Howard would go that he didn't have a camera in hand. The "designated photographer" at every event, he was extremely generous, offering photos, posters, CDs and access to his website to literally everyone he met. Recently, he started mentoring his daughter, Evi, in her pursuit of photography. Howard's engage-ment with all photography grew into a passion for bird photography. He shared this passion with his grandson, Sam, who he took numerous times birding and was teaching how to spot and identify birds. An award-winning photographer, his photographs can be seen on almost every bird website and in numerous magazines and books. Besides photographing birds, he worked closely with conservationists to help monitor and band protected raptors.
Having a love of the Arts, he was instrumental in recognizing and promoting the talents of a young painter, Joseph Reboli (1945-2004). The Reboli Center will be showing Howard's photographs in August 2017. While supporting his daughter, Lisa, with her participation in theater, Howard, himself, went on stage playing a King, a Priest and a songster in a holiday revue show. A prolific writer and wordsmith, Howard wrote poems and illustrated them with his photographs. In 2004, Lisa wrote and directed a play, Winter Solstice, based on his poetry and photography which was performed to sold-out audiences and received The Phila-delphia Inquirer's Best Bets.

Rosemary, I still have your beloved husband in my thoughts and miss his sage advice and attitude about life and its trials and tribulations. I sadly I didn't realize that Howard was such an important part of my life until, sadly, he was gone.
God bless you and be well.

What a sad day this one, now that I have read about Howard's passing. Some voice inside me wanted me to google his name today... Howard was my first and ever mentor growing up. I have spent my first no-parent holiday with him when he took me up to Montana for some flyfishing. I can truly say that this trip has opened my eyes in many ways. The wooden sign of Red Rock Kreek, which he had stolen from the roadside especially for me, is still a strong memory of those days. I will never forget him. Besides that, Rosemary was ever so kind to have me, and some years later my whole family as a guest in her home. I still carry very warm memories of my stays with the Eskins. Much love from Holland to all of the Eskin family

Howard was my closest ADP friend and business associate. He always gave me sage advice and counsel...even when I didn't want it. We kept in touch after retirement and had many internet sessions on a wide range of subjects. I have spoken of Howard to my friends many times about this "Renaissance" man that I had the distinct pleasure to know and work with for many years. My deepest sympathy goes out to Rosemary and the Eskin family.

Howard was not only my father's best friend, he was a true friend to each and every member of our family. I especially remember the Thanksgiving celebrations our two families shared. God Bless!

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Howard. I have such wonderful memories of Howard from our fly fishing trips in Alaska. He made those trips a special experience for me and my son, Michael. Howard would wake us each morning with his singing and laughter. He shared his many stories and would work with Michael each evening on his fly tying skills. I attribute my son's passion for fly fishing and tying to the extra time Howard would spend with him during those trips. Those were special times that I will never forget. Howard was a wonderful man and I will remember him fondly.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I didn't know Howard well, but I do recall very clearly the one and only time I met him. It was the morning of February 26th, 2011 and we crossed paths at Green Lane Reservoir in Montgomery Co., PA. Howard literally took me on a wild goose chase...one with a happy ending. I was a relative novice MD birder/bird photographer at the time, and had made the two plus hour drive from MD to try to get a look at my first ever Barnacle Goose. Howard was also searching for the bird, so we exchanged cell phone numbers and split up to widen the search. As it happened, Howard located the bird first and called me to let me know where to find it. I drove to the spot, Howard got me on the bird, we both took our photos and went home happy. His enthusiasm for the adventure was obvious and he was generous enough to share his time with me, a total stranger. Seemed like a great guy to me. I've attached a long distance photo of the goose...not a great photo, but a nice remembrance of Howard's generosity. Howard probably wouldn't remember me, but I know he'd recognize that goose.

I "met" Howard online re his bird photos, which I really admired. We corresponded occasionally about his pics. Wish I had met the man in person. Condolences to his entire family. His loss will certainly be felt among the birding community.

My condolences and prayers are with Rosemarie and the entire Eskin family. I was one of Howard's 'kids' at ADP on Long Island. I managed two departments at once when he was my GM, he always joked that he knew how to get the most out of us. He 'grew' many leaders in his day, back when it was fun. I have many fond memories of those days. He was an amazing person. I was very sad to hear that he has passed. May your memories console you at this difficult time. I'm sure there are many wonderful stories. I know I have them too.

Howard was truly a man for all seasons, a friend to all who were fortunate enough to know him - an absolute one of a kind. To know him was to be in awe of someone so gifted and sharing.

March 6, 2017

I never met a man with a bigger heart. God bless you Howard Eskin. My prayers and thoughts to Rosemary and the family. Thank you for sharing him with his ADP family.

March 6, 2017

Howard was a mentor to me at ADP for most of my 22 years. He always had infinite wisdom to share and was always spot on accurate with the way to treat people and how to be a true professional in business. I remember one of his many mentor sessions when I had to fire for the first time an associate of mine - he said "if you are excited to fire someone, you are in the wrong business AND if you are afraid to fire someone you are also in the wrong business." That stuck with me for my entire career. He was a gentle man that looked out for those that asked for his help and guidance. My happy thoughts go out to his Family - he will be missed! Joe Steinrock
