HUGH McNALLY Obituary

McNALLY

HUGH J., died peacefully at home on September 11, 2013 from cardiac failure. He was a resident of Philadelphia and Shipbottom NJ. Hugh was the beloved husband of Peggy (nee Lawless), father of Meg, Hugh (Christine), Anne (Joe Pie'), John (Justine) and Colin (Sylvia). He is also survived by 10 grand-children; his brother, Andrew, and sister, Sister Mary Sarah R.S.M. He was predeceased by his parents, Sarah and Hugh P., and his brother John.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the United States Marine Corp. Hugh spent 57 years with the love of his life, Peggy. And spent 42 years with his second great love, running McNally's Tavern in Chestnut Hill. Work was never a job for him; hospitality was his gift and he relished his days behind the bar, cooking and serving. He nourished generations of customers with fine fare, the Schmitter® in particular, but fed patrons' spirits with stories, poems and encouragement, always having time to listen and a good word for everyone.
Please join the family for a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Mother of Consolation Church on Wednesday, September 18, 11 A.M. Relatives and friends may call at the Church starting at 9:30 A.M. A Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Francis Church on Long Beach Island in New Jersey at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to St. Joseph Villa, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown PA 19031. (JACOB F. RUTH)

What a wonderful family and footprint he leaves in Chestnut Hill. McNally's? That is where my visiting brothers and sister met me when our Mom died nearly fiifteen years ago. A Schmitter, a beer and family, friends in Chestnut Hill. Now, THAT is what I call home. Thanks for the memories and my sympathy to the family.

A great human being with a warm and caring heart and soul has departed, but the memories shall never fade. Your loss is huge, and I can only share your pain. Remember the ones we love never go away. They are always by our side, even on days when you miss them the most. May the memories bring joy to your heart and a smile on your face. Stay strong as only time can heal.

With the passing of Hugh McNally a truly unique neighborhood has lost one of its treasures. As a tavern owner and host he was unsurpassed. Over the years children were thrilled and delighted when he visited the Water Tower Summer Camp to tell stories and make ice cream. A chance meeting with him on the Avenue, with his smile and a hello brightened many a day. The extended McNally Family should take solace in the fact of Hugh's well lived life and the many, many, thoughts and prayers being sent their way...
