IRIS NEWMAN

NEWMAN IRIS (nee BUTEN) On December 24, 2024, of Philadelphia, PA. Beloved wife of the late Gerald Sherman Newman; cherished sister of David Buten (Judith), Beatrice "Bebe" Magee (Paul) and the late Max Buten. Iris was born in Philadelphia on September 5, 1936 to Mish and Nettie Buten. Iris graduated from Brandeis in 1958 majoring in history and went to Israel upon graduation. She returned and earned a Masters Degree in City Planning from Yale University and married Gerald B. Newman in the Sixties. Iris worked for HUD for many years before retiring. She was a student throughout her life, taking courses at St. Olaf's in Biblical Studies and at Penn. She got Bat Mitzvahed at 50ish. She was urbane and a bit of a rebel. Iris lived life on her own terms. She was a loving aunt to her seven nephews and will be missed by them and her sister, Bebe, and brother, David, and their spouses. Family and friends are invited to a Graveside Service Monday, December 30th, 11:00 A.M., at Haym Salomon Memorial Park, 200 Moores Road, Frazer, PA.
