Irwin was a Child Advocate who made a significant contribution to the literature on School Psychology. He was ahead of his time when it came to discipline and children. Many states now have laws against spanking students in school due to Irwin's research and outspokenness.

irwin was that incredibly rare breed of person who really had the insight to know good from evil when he saw them. he always fought for the people who could not defend themselves, standing up to bullies of every kind. let us hope that the next time each of us has to make that decision to put ourselves on the line or allow children to suffer, that we all hear his voice inside our heads, telling us to keep our priorities straight and keep fighting.

School Psychology will certainly miss Irwin. The NASP conference will not be the same without him. I always admired Irwin's ability to "tell it like it is" and be totally honest about what our society needs to do to help our children.

Dr. Hyman was a fun person to talk with. He kept you on your toes which was great in helping me to get through the program at Temple. He will surely be missed both personally and professionally. I did not know that he was sick and was definitely taken off course when I found out that he died. Dr. Hyman has influenced many and he will never be forgotten.

Courageous pioneer, passionate advocate for children, gifted teacher and mentor to scores of psychologists, Irwin you will be missed by students, friends, and colleagues. Your research and writing will live on, but the joy,

humor, and humanity you brought to Division 16, the Academy of School Psychology to NASP and to Temple can never be replaced.

Peace be with you,

Irwin was one of the few folks I knew who could go on a talk show and "win." His knack for combining passion and intellect with an ability to communicate simply yet scientifically was unmatched. I envied those talents, and our profession will miss them.

Irwin's energy, wit and wisdom will be sorely missed. His legacy and influence survives him and will continue to be a positive influence for children and the field of school psychology. I'm proud to have been one of his students who became a colleague. My condolences to his family.

Attending Irwin's service last Friday, I still could hear his voice on that day he called me about ADHD and medication trials. There I was, an upstart Assistant Professor, and I was talking with a legend. I remember being so comfortable with who he was, and his frank, yet personable, style. This legend was also just a wonderful guy. Thank you Irwin for all you've done for me over the years, and may peace be with you.

Dr. Hyman will long be remembered for his thought provoking and effective advocacy on behalf of children. When I now ask students to read his work, unfortunately I will also have to add how much his physical presence will be missed.

It was a privilege to battle side by side with Irwin within our organizations, it was an inspiration to follow his lifelong dedicated campaign to protect children from harm, it was fun to compete with him (for several years we ran neck and neck getting our respective states to be #1 in recruiting NASP members), it was great fun arguing with him fiercely on issues large and small (usually infinitesimally small), it was a joy to be with him any place and any time For many years the high spot of planning any conference trip was the anticipation of meeting up with him. Irwin, you left an empty place in this world which will never be filled.

I am so saddened to learn of Irwin's untimely passing. He was an outstanding school psychologist in every sense of the term. His tremendous contributions, particularly in areas related to corporal punishment, have affected the field and will continue to influence the treatment of children. He was also a delightful guy and will be sorely missed.

I have known no more passionate nor articulate advocate for children and for our profession of school psychology. Irwin loved life and his enthusiam was contagious. He touched the lives of so many of us-colleagues, children and familes. I was privledged for having known him and he touched my life in so many ways. He will be truly missed by all. There will never be another quite like Irwin.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Irwin Hyman’s untimely death. This is a profound loss to those of us who knew him personally. Irwin could always be counted on when you needed him. I will always treasure our lively, rapid-fire, and impassioned conversations. Irwin dedicated himself to the protection of children. He will be missed by his friends, colleagues, and the countless children who lost a champion of their cause.

Irwin always made me smile on the softball field, whether he was trying to or not. He was such a great man who helped me out when ever I needed him. Softball games would never be the same with out Irwin's famous hypnosis. He will be greatly missed.

As a professor of school psychology I frequently reported on Dr. Hyman's work to my students. He was a champion for children's needs, especially in his quest to get corporal punishment abolished. I am saddened to hear of his passing and my thoughts are with his family. They can take comfort in the fact that Irwin as a very respected man in our profession and he will be missed by us as well. Peace.

I am quite indebted to Irwin for his unflagging support during my time of trouble at the University. He was unwavering in his principles and a real "mensch," when it was very difficult to be one.

Always stimulating and challenging, he will be greatly missed. He has made significant contributions to the field that will be an important legacy

In 1968, I was invited to give a colloquium at Rutgers University. Jack Bardon introduced me to Irwin Hyman. From our first conversation, it was apparent that Irwin was a unique and gifted man. Our friendship was formed and continued through the years. In the field of school psychology, his contribution was profound. On a personal level, Irwin was a gentleman, a scholar, and a valued friend. He will be missed greatly. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him.

I have many good memories, including his visit to CMU about ten years ago. Probably my best memory is at an Irish pub in Detroit when NASP was meeting. We all did a lot of singing that night. He will be missed by many.

The loss of Irwin is a real loss for us all, of a man who was a great human being in so many

ways, in addition to being an outstanding psychologist and educator. I am sorry

that I can't look forward to more of those conversations with Irwin between Convention

sessions. He always behaved in a way that made it feel as if we were picking up

a conversation from which we had just taken a break a day or two before. I hope that our posting these messages brings some comfort to the family, as I know it does to us. I can assure them that this sort of outpouring of feelings of loss for one of our members is very rare. Irwin was a giant and we will all remember him with both great respect and deep affection.

Irwin will be remembered as one of the major figures in school psychology of the past several decades. His work on alternatives to corporal punishment is seminal and unique, and will be a lasting legacy. I will remember Irwin as a person whose passion for helping children and advancing his profession is unsurpassed. He will surely be missed both by those who knew him most well and by those who only know of his work.

Susan and family,

It was with utmost sadness that Lynn and I learned of Irwin's death. He served as a mentor and friend to us since our first rural school intervention project in West Virginia over 20 years ago. His warmth and boundless energy will be missed by his family, his students, his colleagues and friends, but, maybe most of all, by the children to whom he gave voice and so ardently defended. You all are in our thoughts and prayers, Bob & Lynn Clark

As publisher of Case Against Spanking and Dangerous Schools, we know Irwin was a passionate advocate for social justice and a positive future for all children. He was also a very hard worker, a funny guy, and a real mensch. We will miss him dearly.
