J.T. BARBARESE Obituary

BARBARESE J.T. May 18, 1948 - March 4, 2026 J.T. Barbarese, 77, of New Brunswick, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at home after a long battle with cancer. J.T. was born and raised in Philadelphia and became a dedicated teacher of English, first for Friends Select school in Center City, Philadelphia, then as a Creative Writing and English Literature professor at Rutgers University. He is professor emeritus of English at RutgersCamden. Poet, translator, and editor, Barbarese earned a BA at Franklin & Marshall College and a PhD at Temple University. He liked to think of himself as a formalist: his books of poetry include True Does Nothing (2018); Sweet Spot (2012); A Very Small World (2005); The Black Beach (2005) which won the Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry; New Science (1989); and Under the Blue Moon (1985). His translations include Euripides's The Children of Heracles (1999) for the Penn Greek Drama Series and After Prévert (2022), a playful twenty-first century take on Prévert's post-war poetry. Barbarese's poems, criticism, and short fiction have been published widely in magazines and journals such as Poetry, the Denver Quarterly, the Atlantic, the Journal of Modern Literature, the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, Commonweal Magazine, the New York Daily News, the North American Review, and elsewhere. He continued to work and publish through his illness; his most recent book of literary essays is Inventions on the Brink. Barbarese lamented that he would never get to see his final book of essays published. Paycheck to Paycheck, his most deeply felt memories about growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia, will be published posthumously in November. He loved playing the guitar and doing crossword puzzles. He will be remembered for his exceptional authenticity, curiosity, and wit. J.T. was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Antoinette Barbarese. He is survived by his wife, Catherine de Laurentis; his children, Niccolo John Barbarese, Julianna Claire Barbarese and Joseph Thomas Barbarese; his step-daughter, Cecille de Laurentis; and his brothers, Tom Barbarese and Dan Barbarese.

Professor Barbarese (I'll never be able to call him Joe no matter how old I get) was my professor multiple times from 1998-2002 and then again during grad school 2007-2010. Everyone that I hung out with during my undergrad period especially, thought Professor Barbarese was the coolest teacher and we'd take multiple classes with him and wait to fill requirements until he was teaching the class. I admired him so much. He approached teaching with an energy, passion, creativity and a down-to-earthness that no other professor quite did in his same way. He instantly knew the students that were there to learn from him and those that were just there to fulfill a requirement. Those who were there to learn who he got to know during multiple classes became family. I can't tell you how often I asked about Catherine, Julianna and Nico throughout my college career and after when I'd email every so often throughout my life. But, just because he took pride in his students doesn't mean he was easy or a push over, far from it, in fact a family story that I've retold at family holidays was how I could never get an A on papers from Professor Barbarese. High Bs yes, but never an A until I did it! I'll never forget that paper. It wasn't until grad school and I was a paper on TS Eliot and Virginia Woolf and I had to give a presentation on it too. If you don't like public speaking go to grad school. It will knock the fesr right out of you because at least in Professor Barbarese's classes we had a presentation every week. Anyway, I still have that paper and can't you how much that A still means to me. I'm 45 now, 46 in April. Professor Barbarese just had this knack, thhis thing about him that you wanted to impress him and do well in his classes. At least I did. To Professor Barbarese I say thank you, thank you for inspiring me and pushing me. Thank you for letting me come to the readings at the Painted Bride Quarterly. And thank you for all the great courses. I learned so much. And I'll be reading Black Beach again and I'll have a dopio espresso for you. And to Professor Barbarese's family, I feel like I've known Catherine, Nico and Julianna and my heart goes out to you. I am heartbroken by this loss. But I hope you are comforted by the impact Professor Barbarese had on so many. I apologize it took me so long to post this. I just found out Friday and took time to get my thoughts together. I will miss Professor Barbarese very much.
