JEFFREY BERLIN Obituary

DR. JEFFREY B. BERLIN passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 24, 2021 surrounded by his family. He will always be known as a beloved husband, father, and Opa, as well as an internationally-acclaimed scholar and educator, whose courage and persistence in the face of an ongoing debilitating disease made him an inspiration to all who knew him. The writer and editor of hundreds of journal articles and 10 scholarly books translated into multiple languages, Dr. Berlin was a sought-after authority on Exile literature whose access and insight into the correspondence of German-Jewish authors of the time portrayed, among other important themes, the struggles and determination of those living under, escaping from, and daring to speak out against the Nazi regime. His piercing intellectual curiosity, combined with a delightful, if somewhat off-beat sense of humor, made him engaging company to family, friends, and colleagues from many nations. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by Anne, his wife of 48 years, his children Sam (Tara) Berlin and Rachel (Michael) Moir, grandchildren Fiona and Reilly Berlin, brother Michael, granddog Luna, and a host of loving family members and friends around the world. Funeral services Sunday 1 P.M. precisely at GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS SUBURBAN NORTH, 310 2nd Street Pike Southampton, PA. Int. Shalom Memorial Park. Shiva will follow at his late residence through Sunday evening. Contributions in his memory can be made to the ADL at www.adl.org. www.goldsteinsfuneral.com

From our initial professional contact by mail in the late 1970s until his passing, Jeffrey Berlin was a friend and colleague who inspired my work on Arthur Schnitzler. I regret that the COVID epidemic prevented our first in-person meeting after we reconnected in 2019, despite our proximity (Bucks County, PA and Princeton, NJ). We were corresponding about collaboration on a project he had undertaken in August 2019, and his enthusiasm and desire to work remained strong. Jeffrey's professional contributions were many, and he will be missed by colleagues and the family who loved him. My profound condolences to Anne, Sam, and Rachel.
