Joan was a stalwart member of the social circle that gathered near the goat in Rittenhouse Square for many years. Between having lunch and attending mass at St. Patrick's every day, she would hold forth on a bench, eagerly listening to all one would tell her, and give pithy remarks in return. After several years knowing me, she began to open up about her life and history, and we found things in common. With her black cape, boots and large hat, she was a visual landmark. Many people were friends with her, and when she stopped being there, we all kept asking where was she? She had a good friend there who was a teaching colleague. Her friends from PAFA kept us informed. It seemed clear that she would not rest until those friends knew of her passing. We still wonder, what is her family doing with all of her hats???
