JOHN ISELY Obituary

ISELY

JOHN CRAWFORD, 83, died March 17, 2014. He was born in Boston, MA, and grew up in Washington, DC. John gradu-ated from the Philadelphia Museum School (now University of the Arts). He married Helen Gardner in 1957 and they had two children, Ann and Brian. John moved the family to San Diego to join the art depart-ment of General Dynamics. While in California, he switched his design focus to books and magazines, including Oceans Magazine and Saturday Review of Science.
John's first marriage ended in divorce and in 1976, John moved to Philadelphia to design Nursing magazine, and later, Realites magazine. His design innovations won him multiple accolades and created the look that helped make Nursing the leading nursing journal. Philadelphia was significant for another reason. It is the place where John met Liz Clark. They married in 1983 and shared 30 years together as spouses and as co-art directors. They established their business partnership of Isely &/or Clark Design in 1986.
John is survived by his wife Liz, his daughter, Ann Isely and son-in-law Edward Olmstead, his son, Brian Isely, and daughter-in-law, Judy, and his two beloved grandchildren, Jonathan and Natalie Isely.
A Celebration of John's life will take place later in the Spring.
Memorials may be offered to Hospice of Queen Anne's, 255 Comet Dr., Centreville, MD 21617.
