JOHN WEILAND Obituary

WEILAND

JOHN HERMAN SR., 91, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2014, surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Born July 1, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, he went on to graduate from Olney High School. During his early youth, his father passed away. In addition, he was inflicted with the difficult disease of tuberculosis and was required to lie on a board 24 hours a day for four years to facilitate the healing process of numerous operations. His sheer desire to walk again developed his strong, positive character that lasted his lifetime.
John was one of the owners of Weiland Florists in Philadel-phia, along with his brother Bill and his mother Marie. This business, started by his grandfather, was in operation for almost 100 years in its original location on Wyoming Avenue in Philadelphia. Through the years, the friend-ships he developed with customers and fellow members of the FTD association were too numerous to count. The three Weilands, Bill, John and Marie worked side-by-side for over 50 years.
John was an avid outdoorsman who cherished his time saltwater fishing and hunting, especially with family and friends. He loved those Fall afternoons on the jetties of New Jersey beaches, fishing for bass and bluefish; walking the woods in search of upland birds or sitting in a deer stand in the Pennsylvania woods. He was a long-term member of the North Philadelphia Hunt Club in Pike County PA, an accomplished Boy Scout of Troup 239, an avid bridge player, and a loyal fraternity brother for over 70 years to his fellow Olney Delta Phalanx Fraternity pals.
John was a devout Catholic and shared this faith with his entire family. He spent most of his life as a member of St. Henry's Parish and later at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in the Roxborough area.
John's proudest moments and his greatest accomplishments surrounded his entire family that he loved dearly. To say that he will be missed would be an understatement.
John was predeceased by his parents, Marie and Herman, and his first wife, Anne Cecilia Weiland (1966). He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen, and they recently celebrated their 42nd wedding anniver-sary. He is also survived by his daughters, Deborah Bianco and husband Deacon Salvatore Bianco, Carol Weiland, Mary Ellen Remick and husband Jeff; sons John Herman Weiland, Jr. and wife Katherine, Robert J. Weiland and wife Dawn. He also leaves his grandchildren Salvatore Bianco and wife Christie, Christina Botak and husband Geoff, Angela Bianco and fiancé Martin Rodriquez, Delaney Anne Weiland, Robert Weiland, John I. Weiland, Anne Marie Weiland, Christopher G. Weiland, Allison Marie Remick and Alexander John Remick. This legacy also continues to live on through his great-grand-children Isabela Bianco and Santiago Bianco.
Visitation will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 819 East Cathedral Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128, on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 9:30 A.M. A Funeral Service and Catholic Mass will follow at 11:00 A.M.
Considering that the tradition of flowers is an integral part in the family's life and close to their hearts, in lieu of donations, flowers will be gratefully acknowledged.

Truly an end of an era, some of my happiest memories of my youth were spent around the greenhouses with Billy jr and Robbie, kind of like being in the country while living in the city, John, Bill, and their Mom were allways around and treated me just like family. I will never forget them.

We didn't have the pleasure of knowing John H. Weiland Snr. Reading his Obituary of his earlier struggle with T.B. and sheer determination to walk again, his accomplishments and interests during his life are an Inspiration to all of us and to his family also. They must all be very proud of this wonderful Gentleman, John H. Weiland Snr
We extend our deepest sympathies to John Jnr and family

I first John in or around 1980. My older brother Rich had been working at the florist shop for a few years. I started as tiny frail 10 or 11 year old boy helping the delivery drivers make deliveries during major holidays. When Rich was ready to move on to other things he handed his job down to me. It's during this time that I got to work on a regular basis with John and Bill Weiland. John was always a pleasure to work with, we worked often together in the tremendous heat of the greenhouse in summer. I'll never forget he let me choose the music on the radio and after a few songs he belted out "between the heat and that music I'm going crazy". I also fondly remember the returnable mini coke bottles which were always available in the walk in box and the great lunch meat from corned beef junction. And don't forget the parties in the back room after the major holiday rushes. I thank John and Bill for my memories of those years, I learned so much then and will always cherish my time with the Weiland's. God speed John.
