DR. JOSEPH L. age 95, resident of Rydal, died on December 9, 2005 at St. Joseph's Manor in Meadowbrook. Dr. Finn retired from active practice in Obstetrical Gynecology in 1987 after 50 years, interrupted only by military service during World War II. A native of Wilkes Barre, he graduated from Holy Cross College in 1931 and from Jefferson Medical College in 1935. Dr. Finn served his internship and residency at Jefferson Hospital and was the first physician to hold the position of resident at Jefferson. Following a short association with Dr. P. B. Bland, he was called into military service at the start of World War II. He served for five years, the last two of which were spent as C.O. of a portable surgical hospital attached to the Chinese Army in Central China. He was discharged as a Lt. Col. Upon his return to civilian practice he organized Ob-Gyn departments in the fast-growing northeast section of Philadelphia and adjacent suburbs at Nazareth, Lower Bucks and Holy Redeemer Hospitals, and was an Associate Professor of Ob-Gyn at Jefferson Medical College. He was the first medical staff president at Holy Redeemer from 1956-1959 and later was the first member of the medical staff elected to the Board of Directors of the Hospital. He held memberships in the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, state and local associations, Philadelphia College of Physicians, and was a founding member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a member of Huntingdon Valley Country Club and Moselem Springs Country Club. Dr. Joseph Finn is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Matilda Snare Finn, and loving family: daughters; Barbara Finn of Rydal, Mary and husband Martin Vandenbrook of Kingwood, Texas, Margaret Finn of Rydal; sisters, Agnes McCartney of Richmond, Virginia, Alice Seidel of Pittston, Pennsylvania; granddaughters, Margaret and husband Philip Fraissinet, and Jennifer Vandenbrook, both of Kingwood, Texas; and great grandchildren, Ryan, Brendan and Mary Fraissinet. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral with Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Church, Jenkintown at 11 A.M. on Wed., Dec. 14, 2005. Relatives and friends are invited to the Viewing Tues., from 7 - 9 P.M. and on Wed., after 9:30 A.M. at the Joseph J McGoldrick Funeral Home, West Ave and Cedar Street, Jenkintown, PA. Internment Calvary Cem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, 521 Moredon Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006 or to a charity of your choice.

Dr.Finn will forever be remembered by me as a truly caring, nurturing, and practicing CATHOLIC physician. I had the privilege of being one of his patients as well as a colleague at Holy Redeemer. May God grant him eternal rest.
