Joseph Makem Obituary
JOSEPH V., age 65, suddenly on Sept. 22, 2008, surrounded by his family. A proud retired Phila. Police Officer, 14th District. Joe was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen (nee Gaughan) and cherished father of Catherine Alper (Steve), Maryanne, Nancy and Joseph. Proud grandfather of Daniel and sadly missed brother of Veronica Anderson, Geraldine Blum, Carol Johnson and the late Margaret Castor; dear brother-in-law of Maryanne O'Neill (Tom), dear uncle and cousin to many. Relatives and friends are invited to Viewing Thursday eve 7 to 9 P.M. and Funeral Friday 11:30 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. at THE JOSEPH A. SANNUTTI FUNERAL HOME, 7101 Torresdale Ave., Phila. Funeral Mass Friday 1:30 P.M. at St. Jerome Church, Holme Avenue and Stamford Street. Donations in Joseph's memory to the charity of your choice.

Cathy, I'm so sorry to hear this news. My dad called me at work yesterday to tell me. They worked together in the 14th for a bit. He was a good man and he will be missed. You, Mare, Nancy, and Joe are in my prayers.

I had the pleasure of knowing Joe for almost 20 years when he started working with my father and I at Whittle. He was one the most entertaining, caring and knowledgeable people I have ever met. The Madden family will miss him deeply. God Bless.

Cath, Mare, Nancy, and Joey-your dad was the best and I will miss him so much. From watching any sporting event with him while switching to Sister Angelica to listening to his stories I will always remember him with a smile. Big Joe I miss you. Please let me know if you need anything

The passing of Joe will be broadcast to our 2136 members shortly and we would like to extend our sincere condolences to your family. His absence from our ranks will be deeply missed by the remaining members of Philadelphia’s Finest who were fortunate to have served with him during his police career.
