To the family:
I realize this is very late but I had not the chance to do this very close to his death. I was born five years after he died and I am saddened by that fact every day. He is never out of my thoughts day and night and it is hard to not shed tears every day over the gulf of time that stand fast between us. When I am angry I go to him, when I am sad I go to him, when there seems to be nothing left, I go to him and am always renewed. It is mainly I and three of my other siblings that are enthralled in him and also the Clancy Brothers, others also like him but we listen to them almost every day for hours and hours. If we are not listening to his songs then we are singing them, we know at least some words to every one of about 300 songs. My mother does not enjoy them but we listen to them so much that we have caught her humming tunes of theirs, once she did "The Butcher Boy". I find that researching Tommy makes it impossible to be vexed or cross. I am writing a biography on the four and, with y'all's leave, will publish it. When I am awakened by "The Whistling Gypsy Rover", It takes much to even dim my smile that morning. He has given me joy, and when I hear him, or see him, I receive happiness. I had already loved Ireland before, and that has greatly increased since I heard them. Tommy is my favorite and always will be. I fantasize of meeting him every day, and I have even dreamt of it. Much I would give to see the expression his face when that girl was stealing his shoe laces. All but a handful of entertainers I ever cared about are long dead but he I am convinced will meet me at heaven's gates. I simply wanted to make sure that you knew that it is not only the elder of us that care yet for them. Scarce we may be, but there are still children who love Tommy Makem.
Fare you well, and I give my deepest thanks to Tommy for all that he was and did.

I am listening to Irish radio and thinking of Tommy today. I first heard him on an album with the Clancy Brothers back in 1966. It was the start of a lifelong enjoyment of Irish ballads, music, and dance that enriches my life to this day. Thanks for sharing it with us, Tommy. It all began with you.

My daughter Sue and I never missed a "Tommy" concert. She knew all the lyrics and would always sing along. Her funeral was Wednesday and today I had my private "Irish Wake" singing along with Tommy and all our favorite songs. I hope they are singing together in Heaven.

Sadly, I am now just enjoying the wonderful Tommy Makem. His enchanting voice is brought to me today, March 17, 2010, courtesy of the Irish Travel Board on Create TV of the Public Broadcasting network. Getting to know his music will be a thrilling endeavor for years to come. Although he is with God now, Tommy will live forever through Traditional Irish music played in the villages and cities throughout Ireland.

This will be the first entry of 2010.
I have long been an admirer of the music and work of Tommy Makem. I first saw him with the Clancy Brothers as they performed at the Civic Opera House in Chicago in April or May of 1968. At that concert Tommy sang Four Green Fields and I loved it.
Years later Tommy wrote a book and I purchased a copy of it at Irish Fest in Milwaukee and he autorgraphed it for me. I asked why he had not sung Four Green Fields and he said his voice was a bit bad the night before. He wanted to know how long I had been following him and I told him of the First time I heard him sing it. He grabed my hand at Shoke it warmly and firmly. He said "You have been following a long time." He said the first time he sang it was that night at the Civic Operal House in Chicago.
Tommy, Thanks for all the great concerts, thanks for your many stories and thanks for being such a great performer.
May your soul and the souls of all the faithful deprarted, through the mercy of God, rest in Peace.

I first heard Tommy Makem when I was ten years old and he was 27. I swore then I would marry him!!! Alas, it was not to be but I became a dedicated fan and a true student of Irish music and folklore from that time on. I'm sad to hear he's gone but he provided a unique and remarkable conduit to a world of beautiful, sad and brave music, and a wonderful and inspiring history and culture! And at a time when it was in danger of being lost forever! I remember reading as a young person that the Irish Gaelic was officially a "dead" language when the "last native speaker" had died. Tommy Makem was one of a few who were instrumental in reviving Irish cultural and linguistic pride!! Keep watch over us from Heaven, Tommy!!

For years i sat and intently listened while my greatgranny told me stories of her childhood growing up in keady and informed me of her 'partner in crime' Tommy Makem, her cousin and her best friend. It never twigged with me at such an early age who this 'Tommy' fella was. Now at 18 years old i am fully aware of his character and his presence in the world of irish music. When Tommy last visited Ireland a few weeks before his death, my greatgranny went for a meal in the Armagh city hotel where Tommy happened to be staying, she contemplated going over to him and saying hello, but he was swamped with a crowd of adoring fans so she decided not to. It was only when she learned of his death a few weeks later she was angry at herself for letting the moment pass. To this day she regrets not saying hello for the first time in years and goodbye for the very last time.
So Tommy heres a final farewell from Kay (Kathleen) O'Hanlon nee Donnelly and her greatdaughter Meghan Leonard. You did South Armagh proud...'Tommy Makem'-a name that will forever echo around the rolling green hills of South Ard Mhacha.

During this 2008 Holiday Season, I set aside time to honor those who have gone before me to their eternal reward (my own father, 3 years before) and was happy to have found this Guest Book for Tommy Makem exant, thanks to Google.com.
I recall when I was first introduced to the music and magic of Irish Music back in 1977, when Cleveland's "Fagan's In the Flats" had Tommy and Liam Clancy's Irish tunes blasting on their jukebox: something struck a "chord" within me, and my deep-seated love for my Irish heritage and its music suddenly sprouted, and I have Tommy to thank for that!!
In 1978 or 1979, my friend Theresa Johnson and I saw Tommy and Liam perform at Lakewood Civic Auditorium. Our first Makem & Clancy concert, what a rapture to our young Irish souls! And, Theresa casually told me we would meet them backstage after the concert. ("What??!!!") As daring as she was, I was paranoid crazy of being kicked or escorted out for us even daring such a stunt... but Theresa prevailed & pulled us through! Not only that, Tommy and Liam kissed us lightly on the cheek AND both autographed their (new) "Makem & Clancy collection" LP I bought. I felt, as a young 23-year old, that I had gone to Irish Heaven!! What gracious and kind gentlemen Tommy and Liam were to us, and to a few others that somehow followed us behind stage, as well!
In the years that followed, so did my love and collection of Irish music - and now I have every tune on my iPod! :) Tommy's music has followed my life: played at my wedding in 2001, played at my dad's funeral in 2005, and will, of course, be played at my own someday. But over the years it has enlivened my housework, Christmas/Irish/pool parties at our home, jog-walks and vacations, plane rides, waiting in lines, and my car's cassette and CD players over these many years gone by, with memories too much to recall...
I thank God that my husband was able to meet Tommy with me after he sang and performed at his last Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival a few years ago. I had the distinct pleasure of telling him that he starred prominently in my FAVORITE Christmas movie, "A Time To Remember," to which he comically commented: "you know, my wife told me often that it was my WORST performance ever!!" In reality, a GREAT performance (IMHO), but who could NOT laugh along with him at that remark?? (If you have NOT seen this movie, please do! Tommy sings most of "Sing Me the Old Songs" in the movie!!!)
Now, after his passing, he is our loss and Heaven's gain. Tommy, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand... Eternal rest grant unto Tommy, and let perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace, Amen!
Laura Amundson

I saw him in Des Moines, Iowa sometime between 1992 and 1995. What a performance he gave! I was so impressed that this small man had such a large voice. I've bought every one of his CDs that I could find since then and always recommend his music to those interested in Irish music. I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing.

I saw Tommy sing and play on several occasions, ans had the great honor to speak with him on a couple of those occasions. I truly treasure his music, and every time I sing one of his songs, I remember this gentle and caring man. His love for the music of Ireland maintains the songs to this day, and it is very hard for me to believe that he is gone. This past St. Patrick's Day, I had occasion to sing "Four Green Fields" in a pub in Philadelpha, and even though it was the first time for many to hear the song, they all knew exactly what the song was about.
Tommy Makem was a treasurre. both in Ireland and in North America.

Thanks for the music Tommy. I will always remember listening to your songs on my Dad's old records when I was a child. He used to play them every Sunday morning after Church when cooking up eggs for breakfast. Now, many years later, still imprinted on my memory from childhood.
You would be amazed to know that just the other day I played one of those songs for my own son of only 3 years, and he was able to sing some words and the melody back to my wife a day later (much to her surprise). She asked me where he had heard the song, and how many times he had heard it. --Only once on the computer.
The legagy of your music will with out a doubt continue.
We'll miss you at the East Greenwich Odeum and Newport Folk Festival. Look forward to your son performing, so that my son too can hear the music live.

I just moved back to Cleveland the weekend of the Irish Festival that Tommy usually headlined, and was looking forward to being home and feeling at home with his music touching my heart. Ah, but I knew something was amiss when I saw someone else's photo on the posters. Then I saw my mother's copy of Time magazine and it all became clear. No wonder the performances lacked "something". He was just not where we hoped to find him.
I had an old tape I played the week after, and it broke almost as if it missed him too much to play, I kid you not. We will miss his voice so much.

We were on the Irish Festival Cruise to the Panama Canal in 2007. A nicer man and more genuine than Tommy you could not meet. In failing health we can still see him leave the pier in Fort Lauderdale, and we said "he will not be here next year". However, he still managed to perform on this cruise and kept a brave face on him. Thanks for the music and song, you will be sadly missed, but we are sure you will have the craic on the other side. I've just heard the painful news of Tommy's death. It feels as though I have lost a close family member.
I had the enormous pleasure of seeing him perform live with the Clancy Brothers on two occasions in UK and even now so many years later I can still clearly visualise his mesmeric singing, story telling and playing.
To quote an old adage - they don't make them like that any more.
Such a great loss to Ireland, its music and so many of us who looked up to him.
You are sadly missed.

Where would one begin to speak of all the talents of Tommy Makem? A truly great singer and songwriter, a marvelous story teller, an inspiring Irishman in his humor and wit. I loved him. He was a true gentleman and a true believer.
I saw Tommy and the Clancys first at Lynn City Hall in Massachusetts in the 60s and after listening to their music at all our "rousing" family gatherings, I was delighted when they came to my home town. What a great group! Such great Irish music! I worked with Tommy at the Harp and Bard Pub in Danvers, Mass. We used to have a lot of chats along with the other Irish singers. It was an unforgetable time in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to be a part of the craic, great craic! I have seen Tommy many other times over the years, in Alaska, in Florida, etc, etc. I will miss him sorely, but I know he is with The Lord now. The road rose up to meet him, and the wind was at his back. Slan Tommy, Safe Home. Love from Jan Glennon

I am glad that I had the privilege of meeting Tommy and enjoying his music and song for many years. Although I come from the other side of the Northern Irish divide (I am a Protestant church pastor who sings and writes folk songs for a hobby), I always appreciated both his work with the Clancys and his solo efforts. I am pleased that his sons are carrying on the tradition of their father and grandmother. The family will be in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy at a tiny club in Omaha in 1994. Prior to beginning his set, he took the time to sit and chat awhile with me. I told him about my son Sean Patrick Dolan and my daughter Shannon Maloy Dolan, and his eyes lit up at the joy he read on my face. He told me how proud he was of me being a good father, and then he graciously excused himself, and mesmerized the small crowd as only Tommy could. We'll miss you, my friend.

I grew up listening to the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem albums because my parents played them all the time. We still have probably a dozen albums from the 60s and sometimes play them on the one turntable in the house. :)
I loved the album Tommy did with Liam Clancy probably 20 years ago, some good songs on there. I saw the Clancys and Tommy in concert a few times near Philadelphia around 1990. Saw Tommy solo at an Irish festival around the corner from my house! Got to meet Paddy Clancy before he passed away.
I can't believe he passed away, even if his children and the Clancy's children are carrying on. Their songs epitomize what Irish folk, drinking and rebels songs are to me. Anyone talks about an Irish song, and I immediately hear the Clancy/Makem version of it in my head.
Godspeed Tommy.

I am sad to hear of Makem's passing. I have three original Clancy Bros./Makem records and my cousin Lauren and I would listen to those in AWE when we were younger. We were so captured by the whole thing! Makem's voice was unmatched-in my opinion. He made a great impression on my LIFE and so many others. He was/IS a true inspiration. I play guitar but if only I could play banjo....For some of his BEST vocals fans -and anyone else-should hear he and the Clancy's version of "Ballad of a Butcher Boy" and "Balinderry". I dont know what else to say except God Bless and Rest him.

In the early 1960's, Sister Miriam Joseph Murphy of Seton Hill College, Greensburg, PA,insisted that the English department students accompany her to a Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem concert in Pittsburgh. From that moment forward, I was addicted to their music and saw them when they appeared at Carnegie Music Hall, The Blarney Stone, or at the Irish festival at Station Square. In 1980, my friend Betsy and I went to Ireland. We learned from our landlady , Nelly Nolan ,that they were appearing at the Gaiety Theater, but that the concert was sold out, much to our dismay. Nelly said, "You girls go over to Jury's Hotel and stand in the lobby, and you'll see them when they leave for the concert. And, girls, you introduce yourselves. Then you take yourselves over to the theater, and someone will be outside with have two extra tickets to sell." We did as we were told. Liam and Tommy were beyond gracious and welcoming. What a thrill! Tommy always called us " B & B" everafter. One of us removed a poster from the walls of the Blarney Stone after a concert{the responsible party won"t own up to that caper}. It was the photo on the cliff near the beach at Hough.[SP?} Tommy's eyebrow"s went up,and quick as a flash he said, "Do you two regularly do this for a living? " He really doubled up with laughter when I told him that if I put on a Clancy/Makem tape, I could accomplish my housework in half the time that it ordinarily took.
It is almost impossible to find words to describe his contribution to preserving Irish folk music, Irish poetry, and the culture of the Irish nation in general. We all extend our condolences to his living legacy, his children, and to his family and friends around the globe. We raise a parting glass to our beloved Irish rover and wish him Godspeed on his new adventures.

I can't quite belive I am writing in a book that carries with it the realization that the greatest Irish performer to ever to step foot out of Ireland is gone. Gone but never forgotten. I had the pleaseure of sharing the stage with Tommy in Newfoundland in I believe 1998. I was like a child who had just arrived at Disney World. His music was everything to me and I patterned my style of singing and writing after him. Tommy, I'll never forget sitting in the local coffee shop and discussing the Easter Revolt with you. It's a memory I will cherish forever. I will always be happy for that night. You were my mentor though you never knew it. You guided me through my musical journey's ,alway there. Now you will always be in my heart. Rest in peace my friend you have left a legacy that will never be matched. God Bless your family in this time of sorrow. At least I know that the Makem brothers will never let your music go unheard.

I'll miss Tommy Makem, though I never met him. I've been a fan of his music and his humor for years, as have millions of other people. He inspired me to learn to play the banjo and the tin whistle... the man was a veritable tin whistle ninja. I cried the first time I heard him sing Four Green Fields... still get a little teary.

Not quite sure if words will do it here...No, they definitely will not, but here goes...First found Tommy & the Clancys' first album in my father's bureau drawer back in 1968 during bad times; snuck it OUT of the drawer, played it, and thus began a lifelong love of their music: Thank you Tommy, for all of the life and passion - some of which I do believe has helped me along my own particular journey. God-in-heaven your kids must be proud of you....

Hi Katie,
Sorry to hear about your dad. I was unable to make it to the wake as I was on vacation. If you or your family need anything I am just a phone call away. I will always remember spending my 16th birthday in Ireland with your mom, dad, brothers and you. Rememer the night we both had to eat fish!!! I had a great time. Your dad was a special person. Take care and lets plan on getting together in the near future. My parents send their sympathy also.

We had seen Tommy often at his Irish Pavillion in Mnahattan, as well as at places in New Jersey. When our dayghter Anne died, we had Tommy's song, "Gentle Annie" sung at her funeral. I wrote a letter to tommy telling him of this and received a beautiful letter form Mrs. Makem. She told us that Tommy had in mind his aunt Annie. My fathee was from County Louth and when we took him to the Pavillion, Tommy sang "Farewell to Carlingford, goodbye to Greenore", which was my father's hometown. His passing made me0 real1ize how much we in our family truly loved him. Our loss is heaven's gain.

I was introduced to the music of
Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers in 1965 while visiting Northern Ireland. They have been great "friends" over the years and I never get tired of playing their music. My condolences to Tommy's family and I'm sure he's already regaling them in heaven with his songs and stories!!

I recently saw one of Mr. Makem's videos on Ireland and just began learning of his work. He did beautiful work and must have been the same inside his heart. His family has my deepest sympathy. My paternal grandmother Nancy Jane Kelly, who died in 1884, 53 years before I was born, gave me my Irish roots. My heart yearns to see Ireland some day, but Mr. Makem's videos may have to suffice. May God bless all his family and friends.

I wish to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Tommy Makem. His voice was a blessing to us all! I can still recall the time my mother passed on, I was wandering around the house in the middle of the night, sad and angry; and then I turned to a Tommy Makem song, "Sing Me the Old Songs," I listened again, again and again and all the tears came out. He could always capture us with the spirit of his music and the power of his words. Many prayers to all!

Not only did Tommy Makem give us song, spirit and soul, he also gave his time and talent to SO MANY charitable groups like Child & Family Svcs. Tommy also taught us that it was important for us to remember where we came from and was involved in having folks like Bernadette Devlin come from Ireland to speak at an event in Dover. We will miss his kindness and ability to make us all laugh.
As we step into the days and months to come, we will carry the Makem family in our hearts and prayers as they journey on without their Dad.
May Tommy rest in peace and rise in glory.
With sympathy,

I have only recently began to study who Tommy Makem is through his music, although, in this short time I can see that the world has lost a great musician, historian and someone very special. I will do my part to keep him alive in spirit through the songs he has shared with the world. God Bless the gift of Tommy Makem.

Tommy:
May the road rise up to greet you.
The road has risen, you are at your journey's end.
May the wind be always at you back.
Now it is.
May the Sun shine warm upon your face.
Today you walk in Heaven's sunshine.
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
The four green fields are wet with tears at the loss of their beloved son.
And until we meet again, may the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.
You are no longer in the palm of His hand but seated at His right side.
I'll miss the wit, the stories, the political discussions, but most of all the friendship and seeing you at the family gatherings. Say "hi" to Mary for me.
Thank you for being the legacy that is Tommy Makem.

When all of my friends were into the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, I was 14 and collecting my Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem albums. In '91 I had the pleasure of seeing Tommy perform at a Celtic Festival in Cleveland. The next morning in the hotel restaurant, the waitress behind me asked for the order of the guest. WHO could mistake that voice!!!? Rich and profound, why, you could pick that voice from a thousand-- and all he said was, "Eggs Benedict".
After breakfast we went to pay our bill and he made it to the cashier before us. I was nearly speechless, but I managed to get out "You know, I've been collecting your records since I was 14" (I was 39 at the time). He looked startled and said, "Am I THAT old, then, girl?" and we both laughed. "I thank you for your music, dear man."
He was a most gracious host in his presence -as if his "space" was his home and he was inviting you in. A lifetime was not long enough to know such a soul.
I've no doubt at all that we will meet for good craic on heaven's hills-- which look very like the Dingle Penninsula! Heaven is for the best of all reunions. Save us a seat, Tommy.

Yesterday's funeral service was a beautiful tribute to a great man whose presence among us will be sorely missed. Even though we are having a bloody good cry since hearing of his passing from this life to the next, we are so grateful to you for sharing your father with us, such a unique talent. You are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.
