In addition to his literary and professional accomplishments, Captain Joe was a consummate artisan of waterfowl carvings, a zealous and masterful fisherman, and a talented musician. I have always remembered with pride and childlike awe the social occasions when Uncle Joe and my father Ray would formally or spontaneously entertain their friends, accompanying each other on the drums and piano. Uncle Joe and my father Ray were the embodiment of what brothers are, and what they should be: supportive, competitive, playful, determined, and loving. The Riling Brothers often seemed an unstoppable force of nature. I could never look at Uncle Joe and not think that I was looking at my father, and I will mourn him as if he were. Rest in Peace, Joseph Raymond Riling, and may the angels play you to the Gates of Heaven.

Aunt Peggy and all of my cousins - I'm deeply sorry about Uncle Joe's death. Please know our prayers are with you during this difficult time. I'm down at the shore right now and when I look out onto the ocean, I thinking about Uncle Joe and how he loved the Jersey shore. We all have good memories to hold on to and will keep them close to our hearts.
