Ill never forget the first time that I met Joe Ritchie-Bennett. Id been out on a long walk in the Chilterns with a friend and on returning to Caversham I decided to award myself a pint in my local, the Prince of Wales. I was planning to make some notes for my column in the Henley Standard newspaper. As soon as I entered and approached the bar Joe exclaimed Look, heres a man thats just been on safari, I was in my olives wearing my Tilley hat. Yes, that was Joe personified, I laughed and shook his hand, we became instant friends. He never ceased to rib me on my appearance. Hed call me Crocodile Dundee or Vindiana Jones. Joe was not just very intelligent but was consistently entertaining, everybody in the pub loved him. I never saw Joe without a smile. He possessed unbelievable wit and seemed permanently happy. I only found out recently that he had suffered a personal tragedy some six years back. Joe was not only a kind and loveable character, he had great presence too. For Joe, life was a never-ending party. Like most of his friends I was shattered on learning of his death. I cried for days. Ill never forget him, he was only 39 years old. If there is a God, then please bless him.

Sending heartfelt sympathies to both the Ritchie and Bennett families on your loss of a dearly loved son.
My friendship with Joe began over a Bacardi and diet coke at a bar in Kassiopi. I am truly thankful for that meeting as over the next 5 years he brought so much joy and laughter into my life. Joe has left me with so many great memories that Ill look back on always with a smile (BBL) and he will forever remain in my heart. I am heartbroken by his loss but will look up and see that the skies shine brighter now that he is reunited with his beloved Ian.
RIP my beautiful friend X
